    But, if you look at it, those numbers don't add up. 401 total suspects. 330 negative and 128 under observation ... and 128 positive? Someone doesn't know how to add. 330 + 128 + 128 = 586. Even 330 + 128 = 458, not 401. ??
any possibility that those categories are not mutually exclusive sets? (thinking math here )
In other words, that some of the 330 negative might still be under observation, or that some of the postiives might be excuded from the total suspects because they became confirmed and died. Something like that?

Could be. But, if so, it's going to be really hard (if not impossible) to figure out where this reporter got his numbers from.

The three categories the journalist(s) used are: positive, negative and under observation (plus totals). The three categories the gov't uses -- which do not overlap (i.e. they are mutually exclusive) -- are: Human Avian Influenza, Under Investigation and Non Avian Influenza (plus totals).

I would think that the journalists' and the government's categories match up like this:

    Human Avian Influenza = Positive
    Under Investigation = Under Observation
    Non Avian Influenza = Negative

If so, then the journalists' categories don't overlap either, which means someone got their maths wrong.

Or, the two sets of categories are not related -- and maybe some of the journalists' categories are not mutually exclusive, like you say.

Who knows? Did this make any sense? I've gotten myself confused now! :p

      16/05/2006 07:39

The Karo Land Regional Government it was considered gave information that unclear the matter of positive results of bird flu against five villagers the Simbelang Fortification. This statement triggered villagers protested to the Regent D. D. Sinulingga.

Liputan6.com, Tanah Karo: Hundreds of villagers the Simbelang Fortification visited the Regent's Hall the Karo Land, North Sumatra, on Monday (15/5). Kasus Cluster Flu Burung Kian Besar

        a. Surveilans epidemiologik.

Re: Indonesia - Family in Karo suspected of having bf

          translation of above post.

Jakarta -- the Case of bird flu in the Karo Regency, North Sumatra, was the case cluster sixth in Indonesia.
This 'was cluster just and that biggest', said Pengendalian Breakingprep Penyakit Director and environmental Sanitation, the Department of the Health, I Nyoman Kandun, in Jakarta, on Monday (15/5).
The case cluster with eight people who were infected, pointed out the case cluster increasingly big from time to time.
So as 'we must increasingly was on the alert',' said Dr Tjandra Yoga Aditama SpP (K) DTM&H the MARCH from the Pulmonologi Department and Medical Respiration FKUI/RS the Friendship, Jakarta in Jakarta, Ahad (14/5).

However, according to Kandun, up to now did not yet have proof that showed the existence of the spread of the virus from humankind to humankind to humankind.
To know be available-not him the spread from humankind to humankind, said Dr Tjandra, must be carried out by two matters.
          A.
          Surveilans epidemiologik.
To know the possibility of the spread from the person to the person and did not have the story of the spread from the same source.
The example that most found it easy to be tertular him in the 30 's the RS official in Singapore by a patient SARS last 2003, that was mentioned as superspreader.
          B.
          The virology research.
To know be available-not him the new virus that was a kind of 'merger' between the bird flu virus and the virus of human flu.
If not yet fully the 'merger', at least was found by the virus that the depth part was H5N1 and his exterior was H1N1, for example.
According to Dr Tjandra, currently Indonesia in the stage three, that is only had the spread between limited humankind or to the close family then.
To until was mentioned in the stage four, said Dr Yoga, the stage four was marked by approximately 25 people that tertular.

Further he proposed the new matter in the scientific discovery of the bird flu virus was the discovery of the receptor of the bird flu virus in humankind evidently was on the interior lungs, that were mentioned alveoli.
          This that caused two matters:
          1.
His lung damage was fast and wide.
          2.
That the spread lack antarmanusia in the community, because if the virus receptor far inside the lungs, then certainly not be easy cough up outside and infected the other person.
On the other hand, the receptor of the virus of human flu evidently was on the upper respiratory tract, so as his complaint many that was sick the throat and was easy to spread to the other person.
But', later possibly if the bird flu virus and the virus of human flu already the' merger', then resptor him was on the upper and low respiratory tract.
Meaning that, was easy tertular and at the same time also could cause the inflammation on the lungs (pneumonia) that the area, said Dr Tjandra.

The Department of Health: did not yet have the Indication of the Spread of Bird Flu Between-Humankind
On Tuesday, 16-05-2006 Medan the Business – Jakarta
The director of the control of the Illness and Sanitation of the Department's Environment of the I Nyoman Kandun Health stressed, till at this time did not yet have the indication of the spread of the virus between-humankind, although the case of the infection of the bird flu virus (avian influenza-AI) gathered (cluster) to humankind in Indonesia improved.

“Alhamdulillah until this did not yet have the indication to the side of itu,” said Kandun to Antara in Jakarta, on Monday (15/5).
He explained, apart from the case cluster the indication of the possibility of the occurrence of the spread of the infection of the bird flu virus of the beginning between-humankind could be known when the same case was found in the health power that carried out contact and treated the patient with the infection of the bird flu virus.
“Kalau had the doctor or the positive nurse and the genetic character of his virus was the same as the available virus to the patient, then the big possibility happened the spread between-humankind. But until this that not yet ada,” he said.
Kandun explained, beforehand a nurse who carried out contact with the patient who was suspected or infected by the bird flu virus in Medan was sick and showed the similar sign of the AI virus infection but after being checked by the nurse was stated by the negative or was not infected by this virus.
The person's eleven specimens that carried out contact with the citizen who was expected and positive was infected by AI, said he, also has been checked and all of them the negative or was not infected by the virus of AI H5N1. He said, if having the indication of the spread of the bird flu virus between-humankind then the area of the location of the spread will be isolated.
“Kalau quite positive had the spread between-humankind then certainly the relevant area will be blocked that the spread of the virus does not spread. His poultries also dimusnahkan,” he said.
It was further that he explained, in order to anticipates the spreading of the infection of the virus of government bird flu will intensify the implementation of the national strategy the control of bird flu and widened illness investigation to be able to find the case of bird flu as early as possible.
“Penerapan the national strategy will be intensified. His investigation would diekstensifkan,” he said.
He also asked the community to guard against the spread of the infection and to avoid itself so that not tertular with always guarded the cleanliness himself and the environment.
(ant)

That was seen
With the discovery of the sufferer who was expected suspect bird flu that came from the Fortification Village of Simbelang Kec.Tiga the Karo Land Bow. Moreover currently several of the him has died. The phenomenon of bird flu this time reminded us would the statement that had been spent by Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari that the international community give priority to helped Indonesia in facing the plague of bird flu, but up to now his problem is still being not yet complete. Because if the spread happening between humankind (the pandemic) the death rate in this country could reach 18 million in short time. The ferocity of this bird flu definitely made everyone could be stricken by the fear in this country. An illness sadistically and quickly could kill more than 5 percent of the inhabitants of this country.
Already since several previous months, the plague of bird flu has entered the category of the extraordinary incident (KLB). Therefore, adroit steps and wise must be done. For example how the government co-ordination must be in all the stages maximised. This was needed to cut obstacles to the bureaucracy in the centre and in the area towards the eradication of bird flu. Very possibly if an area through his district head tried to cover the condition up in fact for the interests of his politics.
Afterwards in the area, by the district head could covered the condition actually that in the hope that to was not regarded failed as the district head. His report to the public always well, while the condition could actually be far more worse. In fact, was known by us the problem of bird flu not the local problem and national, but the international problem. All of the inhabitants's eye of this earth was very anxious about one illness was named bird flu. Therefore was hoped for that all the honest regional governments towards the condition that was experienced didaerah respectively, to avoid casualties that far more bigger.
On the one hand, the status of the Abnormality (KLB) that was appointed by the Health Minister at this time was the honest acknowledgment that must be appreciated by the public positively. The Health Minister also activated again the post yandu, that in the Soeharto time famous could eradicate many of the community's illnesses especially illnesses that were suffered by the poor inhabitants in rural areas. Not something that the taboo also made use of the current system in the past, if that was proven could give the contribution towards the improvement of the condition for the community, without must brand him as new efforts of the order re-emergence. The program the famous health in this Soeharto time was one of the programs that was appreciated by the international community that could press as low as possible the sufferer, the tb and hepatitis of the polio illness in Indoensia in the period.

Six casualties died in RS H Adam the Owner three days are still known
His cause positively after receiving confirmation from the Centre of International Hong Kongese Bird Flu. The matter is, until at this time casualties died still was stated as probable case bird flu produced by the Puslitbangkes inspection and WHO.
Was like this it was said Gubsu, Drs Rudolf M Pardede that in accompanied the Section Head the Propsu Health, Dr Hj Fatni Sulani, Director RS H Adam the Owner, drg H Armand P Daulay M. Cash, the Section Head Livestock Breeding, A the Siregar Uterus to the reporter ended considered casualties that at this time was treated intensively in RS H Adam the Owner, Medan, on Monday (15/5).
According to Gubsu, five from six patients who were treated in RS H Adam this Medan Owner died, another still in the intensive maintenance, likewise a person who was treated in RS Elisabeth Medan. From five specimen that was investigated, four including being stated probable (positive had an opportunity), whereas from Namroe-WHO, from 5 specimen all of them positive.
?Hasil this still was probable and in accordance with the provisions and the procedure, the conclusion of the end was still needing confirmation from the Centre of International Laboratory Reconciliation Bird Flu in Hong Kong. That had the authority to announce him was RI Health Minister or the official of the echelon of I Depkes,? he said.
In the same place, Hj Fatni Sulani said in an epidemiological manner, still could not be determined by the source of the certain spread, but it was suspected still came from one same source. Moreover, was not yet known by the existence of the spread from humankind to humankind, so as to have to continue to be done by observation continually.
?Saat this has been konfirmai orally from Puslitbangkes. But did not yet have the report was written. Was based on these findings was maintained by us his status to probable case or a level above suspect, because of having results of the local laboratory inspection. However the increase in the status became positive still was waiting for results of the laboratory in Hongkong,? said Fatni Sulani.
Explained since entering Adam's hospital the Medan Owner last May 8, 5 people have from 6 casualties died. They were Roy Karo-Karo (19) that died the date 9/5, Anta boru Ginting (29) that died tgl 10/5, Boni Karo-Karo (35) died 12/5, Rafael Ginting (10) and Brenata Tarigan (1,5) that died 14/5.
At this time remained at Jones Ginting (25) that still was remaining and was treated in this hospital. Now one other casualty, Obviously boru Ginting (35) that could enter and afterwards ran from RS Adam the Owner, currently is treated in RS Elisabeth Medan.
Sementara kondisi Jones Ginting menurut Ketua Tim Penanggulangan Flu Burung RS Adam Malik Medan Prof dr Luhur Suroso sudah semakin membaik.

Authorities in Indonesia say they have found bird flu in the easternmost province of Papua for the first time.

A senior Agriculture Ministry official says the deadly H5N1 strain of the virus was detected in a number of fighting cocks in the Manokwari area of western Papua in late April.

The official has been quoted as saying the birds were brought to Papua from neighbouring Sulawesi.

Bird flu has now been found in poultry in about two-thirds of the country's 33 provinces.

As a nation, Indonesia has suffered the most human deaths from bird flu this year.

                        Bird-Flu Cluster in Indonesia
                        Hasn't Spread Past Infected Family
                        By NICHOLAS ZAMISKA
                        May 16, 2006 6:01 a.m.

An unusually large cluster of human bird-flu cases in Indonesia so far doesn't appear to suggest that the virus has mutated to spread easily among people, the watershed event authorities are constantly monitoring for fear of a pandemic.
Local and international public-health officials, who have been examining a village where eight members of an extended family in northern Sumatra fell ill after a recent family gathering, said they haven't yet turned up any evidence that the outbreak has moved beyond the infected family itself. Six of the eight have died.

"What we're finding is that there's no evidence of any further spread beyond this one cluster," said Steven Bjorge of the World Health Organization in Jakarta.
The delay in defusing what had become widespread speculation about possible rapid human-to-human transmission of bird flu highlights a predicament the WHO finds itself in. The United Nations health agency is bound to investigate cases, but loath to go public with what it discovers before local governments do.
"We're always waiting for them to take the lead on these things. We provide advice, but after all this is a sovereign nation, and they represent the authority of the government," said Dr. Bjorge, who along with two other WHO officials in Indonesia declined to release specific information they had about the cluster of cases before the central government had a chance to make the information public.
<REPRINTSDISCLAIMER>Local tests have shown that five of the eight family members were infected with H5N1, a deadly strain of bird flu, but definitive results from a laboratory in Hong Kong are still pending.
Graham Tallis, a WHO epidemiologist who has traveled to the family's village to investigate the cases, said that while health officials were on alert for cases of fever and that there were a lot of health care workers in the area, "there's no evidence of spread beyond the family group."
Seven people who had contact with the victims have all tested negative, Nyoman Kandun, director general of disease control and environmental health at the Indonesian Ministry of Health in Jakarta, said late Monday. He added that no additional cases of illness have been detected.
The WHO and local health officials are currently both trying to figure out how the group got sick. The family members all could have caught the virus from the same, avian source, perhaps while preparing a meal with an infected chicken.
The virus may have also passed directly between the family members, although direct transmission between humans has been suspected in very few cases. Even if that proves to be the case, while it would be an alarmingly large cluster of human-to-human infections, it wouldn't necessarily mean that the virus had evolved to spread easily among people, the possible prelude to a pandemic.

So does the above statement indicate that we (the public) will receive information in a more timely fashion, or will information leaks be plugged up?

It seems from the latest reports that the pandemic has not begun with this cluster.

If it was the start, we'd be seeing more infections by now.

Do we have agreement from FT members?
