Any birds with "precocious chicks" have already left. Many shorebirds actually nest in tundra lakes during the summer and the parent(s) may leave the nest in the mid-summer. I'd look down the itinerary path for outbreaks now.

For those who have not made the connection, the sequence that was just released from the grebe in tyva is almost certainly the initial genetic read on this outbreak. The first bird deaths were reported June 23. The released sequence is from June 24. It is very similar to the 2006 whooper swan sequence from Mongolia, which isn't dated, but is likely from the spring or later, since the birds left Mongolia during the winter and would not have returned until the spring.
The Tyva (which is an earlier name for Tuva) and Mongolian sequences are closely related in all 8 gene segments.

Laboratory tests confirmed in July it was the bird flu infection. A total of 3,706 dead water birds were found on the Ubsu-Nur over the past six weeks. Whereas only deaths among one species -- "peganka" (the size of a duck) -- were reported earlier, at present deaths among gulls are reported.
The Tuva government has allocated 650,000 roubles for the veterinary service.
