A teenager suspected of suffering from bird flu died on Friday after being hospitalized for four days at the Kariadi public hospital, Semarang, Central Java.

The 15-year old local Semarang girl has been identified as D.S.

A physician attending D.S., Agus Suryanto, said that the cause of death was a respiratory failure after suffering from fever exceeding 39 Celsius degree.

"There was a chance that she got infected by bird flu as she had been living nearby a chicken abattoir,” Agus said as quoted by kompas.com.

So all of a sudden there are suspected cases being reported again.This goes against the official word of not releasing info. Two of these cases have no reports of dead birds, but both cases worked or lived near butcher shops. Plenty takin tamiflu now and mosques are being disinfected. The general public is aware of how "endemic" it really is. Negatives mean nothing to me. The Indonesian Gov't MUST immediately confine all chicken proccesing to centralized areas and take live chickens off the streets. The continued reckless and indescriminate deaths of children from this disease can be stopped. The Drs there are getting fed up with it and so am I.

During a 2-year period from 2007 to 2008, the proportion of participants with entirely correct results increased from 65% to 77%, whereas the proportion of participants with incorrect H5 subtyping fell from 23% to 12% and false-positive results fell from 14% to 6% (Table 4). False-positive results for negative samples remained at <10% from panel 2 onward.

Of the 868 tests performed on negative samples (panel 1, 128 tests; panel 2, 332 tests; panel 3, 190 tests; panel 4, 218 tests), 32 (3.7%) tests were false-positives; the most frequent false-positive results reported were for influenza A virus subtype H5 (Table 5).

To evaluate the overall performance of participants across the panels, results were categorized as ?good? when >90% were correct and ?less good? where <90% were correct. When all panels were compared, the proportion of participants returning less good results fell from 23% to 13% (Table 3). The improvement in results could be attributed to participation in earlier panels. Of 15 laboratories returning less good results for panel 1, 12 participated in all panels; the number classified as having less good results decreased from 12 to 4 for panel 2 and from 4 to 2 for panel 3; it remained 2 for panel 4.

A total of 44 laboratories returned less good results for >1 of the panels; 8 laboratories participated in only 1 panel; the remaining 36 laboratories participated in >1 panel. These 36 participants were categorized as belonging to 1 of 3 groups according to their performance record: as an ?improved performer? (participant returned less good results in earlier panel or panels but good results in a later panel or panels), a ?fluctuating performer? (participant returned good results in an earlier panel or panels but less good results in a later panel or panels) or a ?persistently poor performer? (participant returned less good results in all panels). In total, 22 laboratories were classifi ed as improved performers, 12 as fluctuating and 2 as persistently poor.

The improvement in H5 subtyping was evident when results for samples with the same concentration were compared. For H1 and H3 subtyping, it appears there is still room for improvement (Table 1).

For all 4 panels, the percentage of laboratories returning all correct results in the European Region was >70%, but in the African Region and the Eastern Mediterranean Region the percentages remained <70% (Fig. 1).

The sharp decline (>15%) in performance in the Region of the Americas and the South-East Asia Region on panel 2 was probably due to the large number of firsttime participants; a similar situation occurred in the African Region for panel 3 and panel 4 (Table 6). For panel 4, the performance of the South-East Asia and Western Pacific regions was comparable to that of the European Region.

Hospital announces bird flu tests were negative
Hasan Sadikin Hospital in West Java announced on Thursday [6 Nov 2008] that
a Bandung resident [suspected to have] died of avian influenza had died of
pneumonia. The male patient, 32, a resident of Jl Inhoftank Bandung
according to the hospital did not contract the [avian H5N1 influenza] virus
as [indicated] by the results of tests by the Health Ministry, Eijkman
Institute, and the hospital.
"All of the results were negative," head of Hasan Sadikin Hospital Cissy
Kartasasmita said. Cissy added that the patient's breathing problem were
inflicted by [another] cause, "but the cause is yet to be determined as we
need time to conclude the cause."

As reported on Tuesday the City Agriculture office conducted a rapid test
on poultry around the neighborhood of the patient's house. The results were
negative. The patient and his family owned a chicken farm which supplies
between 100 and 500 chickens daily.

The patient was admitted to Hasan Sadikin hospital on Sunday last week [2
Nov 2008] and died on Monday. Doctors in their early report on Tuesday [4
Nov 2008] last week said some of his internal organs had been in bad

West Java hospital probes bird flu death

The Hasan Sadikin General Hospital in Bandung is investigating the death of a suspected bird flu victim who died of acute pneumonia, because initial tests showed no signs of H5N1 virus infection, hospital director says.
Hospital director Cissy Rachiana Prawira said the complete test results would be available within 10 days.
Cissy said the hospital received test results from the Health Development and Research Center in Jakarta on Thursday, four days after Dadang Hadiansyah, 32, died at the hospital's isolation ward.
Dadang earned a living slaughtering chickens.
Cissy said tests conducted by the hospital's microbiology lab also showed the victim's blood and phlegm samples were H5N1 negative.
"We must continue the tests to determine the type of microorganisms that caused the sudden death because the victim had direct contact with poultry," Cissy said in Bandung on Friday.
She strongly denied Dadang's death was due to late treatment, but rather due to a delay in diagnosing the disease.
The head of the contagious disease supervision division at the Bandung Health Agency, Muhamad Songka, said field analysis conducted around the area where the victim lived on Jl. Inhoftank -- where poultry are placed in transit before being sold to markets -- had not shown whether neighbors or the victim's relatives had contracted the same disease.
Songka said he was concerned about the presence of other virus strains that may have caused the acute pneumonia, given the sudden attack.
"I think the spread of the bird flu virus is a mystery. Perhaps it was not the H5N1. We are very curious of the actual cause," Songka said.
After testing around 500 chickens at Dadang's house, officials from the agricultural agency found one chicken infected with the virus.
Dadang' father, Ukun Sobandi, 66, said at least three chickens died every day due to heat and overcrowded cages.
Head of the environmental health and housing division at the West Java Health Agency, Wahyu Suryaputra, said Bandung was vulnerable to the bird flu virus because of a lack of road check points for livestock and poultry carriers.
"We are focussing on identifying avian influenza by conducting tests because we're afraid it could cause a pandemic. Other viruses could also become violent due to climate factors," Wahyu said.
The West Java Health Agency recorded six deaths the from bird flu from January to July this year, with two each in Bekasi, and Depok and one each in Subang and Sumedang.
As many as 34 people from West Java have been infected with bird flu between 2004 and 2008, with 29 resulting in death.
