The initial test of a 61-year-old woman in central Thailand who fell ill with bird-flu-like symptoms showed positive for avian influenza, Thai officials and local media reported Thursday.
The patient in Lop Buri Province's Sa Bot district fell ill with bird-flu-like symptoms soon after her backyard chickens all suddenly dropped dead, Thai newspaper the Nation said.
She had initially tested positive for avian influenza and was being treated in an isolation ward pending confirmation from laboratory tests, said Dr. Charn Tantiwa-raporn, director of Ban Mi Hospital, where the victim was admitted on Tuesday.
After being notified about the case, provincial livestock authorities rushed to the woman's home to check for bird flu.
District chief Somsak Intra-watana said he had ordered an urgent cull of all poultry in the province after being notified by the livestock authorities.
This district did not have many chicken farms and most of the poultry were fighting cocks and native hens, he said.
Although denying the existence of bird flu in Sa Bot district, provincial livestock chief Jintana Danwiwatporn said experts were coordinating with other agencies in dealing with hundred of thousands of migratory birds.
Along with warning against cooking and eating sick poultry, the Public Health Ministry was distributing some 100,000 manuals designed to educate the public about bird flu and ways to prevent infections, said Dr Narongsak Ungkhasuwaphala, the ministry's deputy permanent secretary.
Meanwhile, Anutin Charnveerakul, caretaker deputy health minister, said as of Wednesday, 144 patients from 24 provinces, mostly in northern Thailand, had been put on the watch-list for bird flu.
Two more suspected human cases were found in Phichit Province, where the first case of human bird flu was recently confirmed. Phetchabun Province also reported four cases and Phitsanulok three cases.

Suspected bird flu patients isolated in Chachoengsao

CHACHOENGSAO, Aug 3 (TNA) - Two patients, hospitalised for human flu in a state hospital here, were put in an isolation ward on suspicion of having bird flu as doctors conducted laboratory tests to confirm the diagnosis, a senior health official said Thursday.

Dr. Thawat Suntrajarn, director of the Department of Disease Control, said that after earlier tests confirmed an infection of human influenza, doctors at Ban Pho Hospital isolated the two patients in a closed-circuit television equipped camera to monitor for bird-flu related symptoms around the clock.

''Because they are having a human influenza, further tests are need to confirm what type of the human flu virus they have and whether they also have bird flu,'' Dr. Thawat said.

The patients' names were not released by officials but they were referred to as a 17-year-old youth and a 42-year-old woman. Dr. Thawat said the young man had touched ducks as both he and the woman worked in a duck slaughterhouse in the eastern province of Chachoengsao, not far from Bangkok.

A local livestock official said the province has raised some 5 million chickens in farms but no bird flu outbreak has been reported in local poultry.

According to Dr. Kasiwat Sripradit, the hospital director, the two patients were admitted with high fever and bad cough.
He said that doctors and clinical technicians found no evidence of infection in their lungs, such as the pneunomia-like symptoms suffered by bird flu patients, and their temperatures have gradually reduced.

''We have only 70 tablets of Tamiflu in our drug stockpile. A suspected bird flu patient needs two tablets a day for five consecutive days. If we run out we still could get more supply within an hour from nearby hospitals,'' Dr. Kasiwat said.

Ban Pho Hospital has also set up special teams of doctors and medical staff to deal with suspected cases of bird flu and a drill is planned for September to test their readiness, said the doctor.

Thailand recently confirmed an emergence of bird flu which last week killed a teenage boy in the northern province of Phichit. He became the country's 15th victim of bird flu since early this year.

Officials said of 144 patients currently listed throughout Thailand, about 70 of them live in Phichit and were awaiting tests for bird flu. Other 74 patients live in Sukhothai and Suphanburi.

An outbreak of the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu virus was also confirmed in the country's northeastern border province of Nakhon Phanom where some 765 people remain under close observation for possible avian influenza infection after close contact with infected birds.

Local officials said some 300,000 commercially-farmed chickens were culled last Sunday in an attempt to contain the outbreak. (TNA)-E110

Suspected bird flu patient, Kaewtip Chiang-in, died in Lop Buri

Suspected bird flu patient died in Lop Buri

LOPBURI, Aug 3 (TNA) ? A nine-year-old girl, suspected of having bird flu, was pronounced dead Thursday, one day after being admitted to a hospital in this central province, according to a health official.

The body of Kaewtip Chiang-in was kept at the hospital awaiting a lab test to determine if she was infected with bird flu.

The girl suffered from fever, sore throat and severe cough for two days. She was rushed to the hospital after having breathing difficulties.

Her family raises about 20 fighting cocks.

Provincial health officials had inspected her house and nearby areas although none of the fighting cocks died of any unknown cause.

In the northern province of Nan, four suspected bird flu cases were reported and officials are waiting from their lab test results.

Meanwhile, Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Sudarat Keyuraphan said Thailand would jointly discuss with officials of neighboring countries on measures to control bird flu disease.

The ministry will also hold a meeting of livestock officials in 21 at-risk provinces on Saturday to thrash out measures to prevent bird flu.

                  Re: Thailand 8/02 -

Interesting post #18 from FrenchieGirl- "we have only 70 tablets of Tamiflu in our drug stockpile. A suspected bird flu patient needs two tablets a day for 5 consecutive days. If we run out we still could get more supply within an hour from nearby hospitals." I wonder: 1) are all suspected cases put on the Tamiflu immediately? 2) 70 tablets would care for 7 patients for 5 days of treatment- what preps are in place for those who require more care? 3) would HCW's be receiving Tamiflu at the same time? or would they need to register with symptoms? 4) Thailand is presenting with many suspected cases- and the list seems to increase- is this 70 indicative of a limited supply? or simply limited information?

Two patients isolated on bird flu suspicion in eastern Thailand

                          UPDATED: 07:35, August 04, 2006

Two patients hospitalized for human flu have been put in an isolation ward on suspicion of having bird flu in Thailand's eastern province of Chachoengsao, as doctors conducted laboratory tests to confirm the diagnosis, media here reported Thursday.

Thawat Suntrajarn, director of the Department of Disease Control, said that the two patients, who had been earlier admitted to Ban Pho Hospital in Chachoengsao with high fever and bad cough and confirmed an infection of human influenza, were isolated in a closed-circuit television equipped camera to monitor for bird-flu related symptoms around the clock.

"Because they are having a human influenza, further tests are needed to confirm what type of the human flu virus they have and whether they also have bird flu," Thawat was quoted by Thai News Agency as saying.

Authorities didn't release the patients' names but referred them as a 17-year-old youth and a 42-year-old woman. Thawat said both of them worked in a duck slaughterhouse in Chachoengsao, not far from Bangkok.

A local livestock official said the province has raised some 5 million chickens in farms but no bird flu outbreak has been reported in local poultry.

Latest news on bird flu, also called avian flu, a type of influenza that infects birds and sometimes humans

Public health official reports no new bird flu cases
BANGKOK, Aug 4 (TNA) - Public Health Ministry lab tests confirmed that three suspected bird flu cases in Lop Buri and Chachoengsao tested negative to the H5N1 bird flu virus, a senior ministry official said
                            Friday.

Department of Disease Control director-general Dr. Thawat Suntrajarn said the nine-year-old girl who died in hospital in the central province of Lop Buri Thursday, as well as two patients with flu symptoms in hospital in Chachoengsao, were not infected with the H5N1 virus but with Type A flu virus.

Dr. Thawat said the child did not have direct contact with chicken or other birds and at the first stage, the cause of death was believed to be severe pneumonia.

The other two suspected cases were workers who slaughtered ducks in a processing factory but they
were raised under sanitary conditions and were free of disease.

Moreover, there have been no suspicious deaths of poultry in the province.

Dr. Paichit Warachit, director-general of the Department of Medical Sciences said that provincial health offices have implemented preventive measures against bird flu.

As of August 4, there were 39 outstanding suspected cases awaiting lab test results, according to Dr. Paichit. (TNA)-E004

So far as I know, H5N1 is a Type A flu virus. Please correct me if wrong.

Yes it is. What they meant, though, is a normal human influenza A virus--H1N1 or H3N2. Those two strains can and do cause severe pneumonia, killing patients in the process. It is relatively unusual for them to kill a 9 year old girl however.
