Bird flu found in chickens in eastern China - Yahoo! News
Bird flu found in chickens in eastern China

BEIJING –

Authorities in eastern China have killed more than 300,000 fowl after bird flu was discovered in chickens, the Agriculture Ministry said Tuesday.

Veterinary officials in Hai'an county and the city of Dongtai, both in Jiangsu province, said chickens in the two areas tested positive for the H5N1 virus, according to a ministry statement faxed to The Associated Press.

It did not say when the birds got sick, whether they had died from the virus or how many were infected. The areas are about 20 miles (30 kilometers) apart.

In order to prevent an outbreak, authorities in Hai'an and Dongtai killed 377,000 chickens and other domestic fowl in surrounding areas, the ministry said. They have also disinfected and quarantined affected zones and banned the transport of fowl and related products from Hai'an and Dongtai, it said.

Migrating birds may have been the source of the disease, it said, without giving details.

Experts have said that wild birds play a role in transmitting H5N1 into commercial poultry populations, although they believe the spread is largely related to the trade of birds and their products, including cross-border smuggling.

H5N1 has prompted the slaughter of millions of birds across Asia since late 2003 and caused the deaths of at least 246 people worldwide, around a third of them in Indonesia, according to the World Health Organization.

It remains hard for people to catch, with most human cases linked to contact with infected birds.Last week, the Hong Kong government ordered the slaughter of more than 80,000 birds after three chickens found dead on a farm tested positive for the virus. It also imposed a 21-day ban on poultry imports.

Twenty countries had outbreaks during the first nine months of 2008, down from 25 during the same period last year, U.N. officials have said.

Some experts worry that the public has lost interest because the virus has so far not mutated into a much-feared form that could spread easily among people, potentially sparking a pandemic. But the World Health Organization has urged Asian governments not to let down their guard against bird flu because the recent Hong Kong outbreak proved the disease still poses a threat.

Very shocked, Jiangsudongtai bird flu seems to have taken place, a large number of dead chickens in the flow of the national disease

Boxun Beijing on December 15, 2008

Very shocked, local governments Cover, the disease has a large number of dead chickens flows to the country (Ministry of Agriculture has recently been sent to the east of Taiwan).

Jiangsu Province, eastern Taiwan, large areas of dead chickens, dead chickens almost the flow of patients in major cities, as well as Shanghai, Shandong, Henan, and other places. Dead chickens slaughtered after an underground hideout, water treatment (hydrogen peroxide), after soaking, quick-frozen and shipped to the flow field, just east of the three stores in Southern Taiwan, Tang Yang North has processed more than a dozen, day and night, every day There are tens of thousands of dead chickens sent to patients across the country or frozen, wait until the Spring Festival market, probably in place of the cold, put a few 100,000.

Down to the Spring Festival, which flows to the market, people buy these bacteria with the chicken, if a major cause of food-borne diseases, which will lead to disastrous consequences. The country did not give a reply before the proposal to buy all the chicken carefully.

Playback of things:
Jiangsudongtai, chicken Hai town, home to visit relatives in recent days, there have been close to his home found a suspected outbreak of bird flu disease, the emergence of local chicken deaths of more serious, the Government's commitment to too little compensation or no compensation, the farmers of the heart They chicken a few dollars to the price and sell illegal experiences, processing them, sent to the country, only yesterday, I saw a dozen infected with the virus in chickens in a truck in Shandong. The spread of sarcasm that "the people of Shanghai and other cities for fear of heart after the price of chickens since cheap." As the saying goes, a good cheap goods not good good not cheap goods, I hope that we buy chicken, it is necessary to be more careful.
Some chicken farmers as a result of the earthquake, many farmers heavily in debt, therefore, dumping the family silver production, I understand that many of the farmers, at home, grief, I do not know how to think of the local government, farmers do not know the seriousness of the problem, local Not completely control the epidemic, some farmers, and bought some chicks, may cause a vicious circle.
If the channels through which the virus spread to other parts of the lead to disastrous consequences, which spread to almost get close to the city, I hope that the local government to the local people, the National People's responsible for taking the initiative to inform the community, not concealed, not to , To the 2004 national bird flu, died talents attention, I would like to pay attention to.

In fact, in our home in peacetime, has been a long time, and most of all chicken farmers, it is impossible not to dead chickens, the chicken's death, even for several days already, and even made a green (dead chicken for a long time), some of the small business Hawker In order to buy a dollar, to the illegal, a soaking liquid, after soaking message, use plastic packaging. Transported across the country. I would like to talk about the state of the dead chickens to investigate the whereabouts of the issue in the hope of national importance.

This thing almost happened about a good time, on December 12, I almost had to report the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Agriculture said a lot of people have been reported, probably will be a day or two to the east of Taiwan was, I would like to act impartially.
The country did not give a reply before the proposal to buy all the chicken carefully.

I would like to remind the hope that reporters requested the investigation:
1: Why do local governments to cover up these things.
2: These chickens died, to those places.

I am not a reporter, I am as a person with a conscience, in my personality that I can talk to me, liable.
I hope we put the top for the Government to speak out clear.

Sources say that over the last few weeks, there has been an outbreak
of possible avian influenza near Jiangsu's Haian and Dongtai
[counties]. Local chicken deaths are relatively serious. Egg
production has dropped sharply due to the outbreak. But because [the
outbreak] has not yet been confirmed by authorities, it is still
uncertain whether it is actually avian influenza. Area demand for
poultry feed has dropped under the impact of chicken deaths and
declining egg production.

Based on this correspondent's survey, similar outbreaks have not
occurred in Jiangsu's neighboring areas other than the above 2
places. It is hoped that poultry farmers will quickly take
precautionary measures.

China province culls chickens after bird flu found
Tue Dec 16, 2008 5:06pm IST

BEIJING (Reuters) - Eastern China's Jiangsu province has culled 377,000 poultry after laying hens tested positive for the H5N1 bird flu virus, the Ministry of Agriculture said on Tuesday, in the first reported case since the early summer.

Experts fear that the H5N1 virus, which can be contacted by humans, could spark a pandemic if it mutates to the extent that it can be transmitted easily among people.

The ministry said the virus, of the H5N1 variety that can spread to humans, was found during routine checks. No birds were reported sick, it added.

Bird flu is most common during the cool, damp winter. The virus turned up last week in a farm in Hong Kong, leading to the culling of 80,000 birds.

So far this winter, bird flu has killed two people, in Indonesia and Egypt, and made two people ill in Indonesia and Cambodia.

380,000 chickens killed in bird flu cull

Article from: Agence France-Presse
From correspondents in Beijing
December 16, 2008 10:49pm

CHINESE authorities have begun destroying and vaccinating poultry after an outbreak of bird flu was discovered in the east of the country, the agriculture ministry says.
The deadly H5N1 strain of the virus was discovered on a chicken farm in Dongtai city and in another farm in Haian county both in eastern Jiangsu province, the ministry said in a statement posted on its website today.
The discovery prompted local agricultural authorities to step up vaccinations, while culling 377,000 chickens in the area around the farms.
The spread of the virus had not been detected in any other areas around the two farms, it said.
"Preliminary expert analysis from tests have found... The farm poultry could have been infected by migratory birds,'' it said.
The discovery in Jiangsu comes after an outbreak in Hong Kong, on the south coast of China, last week resulted in the slaughter of more than 90,000 chickens there.
Authorities in Jiangsu have also quarantined Haian county and Dongtai city and stopped the transport of all poultry and poultry products from entering and exiting the area, the ministry said.
Local agricultural officials were also stepping up disinfecting measures in the region, it added.
The outbreak was the first in mainland China since an outbreak was reported in Guangdong province, which neighbours Hong Kong, in June.
China's agriculture ministry warned last week of further bird flu epidemics in the nation during the winter months when migratory birds are in flight and weather conditions provide a good environment for the spread of the virus.
H5N1 has killed more than 200 people and ravaged poultry flocks worldwide since 2003, according to the World Health Organisation.
Scientists fear the virus will eventually mutate into a form that is much more easily transmissible between humans, triggering a global pandemic.

China Culls Fowl in East China After Finding Bird Flu (Update1)
Email | Print | A A A

By Lee Spears
Dec. 16 (Bloomberg) -- China culled 377,000 poultry in eastern Jiangsu province after finding the H5N1 strain of the avian-flu virus in chickens in the area, the Ministry of Agriculture said on its Web site.
The virus was found in poultry being raised in Dongtai city and Hai’an County, both in Jiangsu, the ministry said. There was no outbreak of the virus in the region, the statement said.
The areas where the poultry were raised have been disinfected, other poultry have been placed under quarantine, and transport of all poultry from the two areas has been halted, the statement said. Experts have been dispatched to the affected areas to survey the situation, it said.
Contact with migratory birds carrying the virus is one possible cause of infection in the poultry, the statement said. The announcement comes after dead chickens in Hong Kong last week tested positive for the H5N1 strain, and India culled more than 250,000 birds in its northeast to contain an outbreak.
At least 387 people in 15 countries have been infected with the deadly H5N1 strain of the avian-flu virus since 2003, according to the Geneva-based World Health Organization. Almost two of every three cases were fatal. China has had 30 bird-flu cases in humans and 20 deaths since December 2003, according to WHO.

<China Slaughters Thousands of Chickens After Finding Bird Flu
more in Health »

By GORDON FAIRCLOUGH

SHANGHAI -- Chinese agriculture officials ordered the slaughter of more than 300,000 chickens after they found poultry infected with a lethal form of avian influenza -- the first such outbreak publicly reported in mainland China since June.
The discovery of the H5N1 form of the bird flu virus in two areas of Jiangsu province northwest of Shanghai follows recent outbreaks in India, Hong Kong and Southeast Asia, raising the risk of human infections during the winter.
After routine testing turned up signs of the H5N1 virus in chicken eggs on farms in two locales, the agriculture ministry said it moved to cull 377,000 chickens and ban the transport of poultry in or out of the affected areas.
Bird flu remains mainly a danger to poultry, not people, since it is not easily transmitted to humans. Just 38 cases of human H5N1 infection -- including 29 that led to deaths -- have been reported this year. That's minuscule compared with the number of people who die annually of regular influenza.
Still, the World Health Organization and others say governments in Asia and around the world should be on their guard against H5N1, because the virus has the potential to mutate into a more transmissible form and spark a deadly pandemic.
Last week, Hong Kong health authorities ordered the slaughter of 80,000 chickens after three dead birds tested positive for H5N1. It was the first group of new cases on a farm in the territory in more than five years.
Hong Kong officials also said they would temporarily suspend poultry imports as they work to determine the source of the infection. Hong Kong officials have said smuggled fertilized chicken eggs from China could have carried the disease.

Mass poultry cull carried out in east China over bird flu threat

17:39|16/ 12/ 2008

BEIJING, December 16 (RIA Novosti) - About 380,000 chickens and ducks have been culled in eastern China's Jiangsu Province following an outbreak of bird flu, the Xinhua news agency reported Tuesday citing China's Agriculture Ministry.
Two hotbeds of the H5N1 virus have been discovered in the province, the ministry said.
In early December the Chinese Health Ministry warned that new outbreaks of bird flu were likely in the country.
The last confirmed outbreak of bird flu in China was registered last week in Hong Kong, when over 80,000 chickens were slaughtered after samples came back positive for the virus.
According to the World Health Organization, avian influenza has so far killed 243 people out of a total 387 confirmed cases worldwide. Although there have been no incidences of human to human infection, experts fear that it may mutate into a form that could easily be transmitted from person to person, causing a global pandemic.

Hong Kong: Importation of Jiangsu poultry eggs suspended (12/16/2008) [CFS]

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) announced today (December 16) that importation of poultry eggs from Jiangsu Province into Hong Kong would be suspended with immediate effect.

"The decision was taken following confirmation of H5N1 avian influenza involving chickens in the province," a CFS spokesman said.

"According to the information from the State General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine , there are four registered egg processing plants in Jiangsu Province. We understand that no poultry eggs have been imported from Jiangsu into Hong Kong in recent years. Nonetheless, the importation of poultry eggs from Jiangsu Province into Hong Kong would be suspended with immediate effect. "

According to CFS' records, there is no live poultry, chilled/frozen poultry meat imported into Hong Kong from Jiangsu Province in 2008."

Deadly bird flu virus found in Jiangsu

NEARLY 380,000 birds were slaughtered after the deadly strain of H5N1 avian flu was found in east China's Jiangsu Province, the Ministry of Agriculture said yesterday.

The virus was discovered in Dongtai City and neighboring Hai'an County, the ministry said in a statement posted on its Website.

There were no reports of human cases.

The ministry said it received information about H5N1 infection among hens in Dongtai and Hai'an on Monday. It was discovered during routine checks; no birds were reported sick.

Preliminary analysis by ministry experts indicated the virus could have been spread by birds migrating through the area, and that it was a different type from the variety usually found in the southern part of the country.

A ministry laboratory yesterday was testing samples of the virus to see if it had mutated. Experts fear that the H5N1 virus could spark a pandemic if it mutates into a form that can be transmitted easily among people.

Local authorities said they have stopped the transport of all poultry and poultry products from the two areas and were sterilizing the poultry farms in those locations and nearby regions to prevent the virus from spreading.

The agriculture ministry has reported the case to the World Organization for Animal Health.

The discovery occurred only a week after 80,000 chickens were culled in Hong Kong after local health departments confirmed that samples tested positive for the H5N1 strain of bird flu.

So far this winter, bird flu has killed two people in Indonesia and Egypt, and made two people ill in Indonesia and Cambodia.

Sounds like clade 0 (found at Qinghai Lake this year) or clade 2.2 (Qinghai, but usually in Japan / South Korea or counries west of China).

China culls chickens after finding bird flu virus

Tuesday 16th December, 11:52 PM JST
HONG KONG —
Agriculture authorities in eastern China’s Jiangsu Province said Tuesday 377,000 chickens were culled after samples tested positive for the deadly strain of bird flu, while a rights watchdog claimed as many as 1.2 million chickens were dead.
The Agriculture Ministry said in a statement it received reports on Monday about H5N1 infection among hens in Dongtai city and nearby Hai’an county.

Fowls culled after avian flu virus found
By Cui Xiaohuo (China Daily)
Updated: 2008-12-17 07:43 Agricultural agencies have culled 377,000 fowls in two counties in eastern Jiangsu province during the past two days after some of them tested positive for bird flu virus, the Ministry of Agriculture said on Tuesday.
A statement on the ministry website, however, said the culling was a precautionary measure and not because of a bird flu outbreak. But health officials are on high alert.
Veterinary officials in Jiangsu told the ministry on Monday that samples collected from some farms in Hai'an and Dongtai counties had tested positive for the H5N1 virus.
The virus was detected on the mainland province less than a week after Hong Kong authorities culled tens of thousands of fowls following a bird flu scare. The Ministry of Health had warned earlier that the possibility of an outbreak of animal epidemic on the mainland this winter was "relatively high".
Dongtai is north of Hai'an and a vital source of poultry in Jiangsu, raising more than 80 million fowls a year.
Animal epidemic experts have been sent to Jiangsu, but neither the ministry nor the provincial agricultural authority said whether the virus had killed any fowl or how many birds were infected.
Local officials have disinfected and quarantined the areas where the virus was detected and banned the supply of poultry from the two counties.
The Ministry of Agriculture quoted agricultural experts as having said that the virus detected in the two counties was different from that found in southern China recently. It suggested that migratory birds could have transmitted the H5N1 virus.
On Dec 9, Hong Kong banned the import of poultry for 21 days and culled more than 80,000 birds after three chickens found dead in a farm tested positive for the H5 virus.
The Ministry of Agriculture, running two nationwide campaigns against bird flu this year, said only 46 of the 4.3 million samples collected between January and October had tested positive for H5N1.
The H5N1 has killed at least 246 people across the world, with Indonesia accounting for one-third of those deaths, and forced authorities across Asia to cull millions of fowls since late 2003, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said.
The virus has not mutated to pass on from human to human and people have been infected only after coming into direct contact with sick birds. The number of countries and regions reporting a bird flu outbreak in the first nine months of the year fell from 25 in 2007 to 20 this year, UN officials said.
Experts are worried because many people have started taking bird flu casually since the virus has not mutated. WHO has, however, urged Asian governments not to let down their guard against the virus.
