Two-year-old girl contracts bird flu in China
Posted: 18 January 2009 1008 hrs

BEIJING: A two-year-old girl has been diagnosed with bird flu in northern China and is in critical condition, state media reported Sunday, just days after the nation reported a death from the virus.

The girl was hospitalised in Shanxi province on Wednesday and subsequently tested positive for the H5N1 strain of avian influenza, the Xinhua news agency said, citing provincial health authorities.

She had fallen ill in central China's Hunan province earlier in the month but had been taken to Shanxi by her grandparents, according to the agency.

Health authorities were monitoring an undisclosed number of people who had been in contact with the girl, but none had fallen ill so far, according to the agency.

Earlier this month, a 19-year-old woman died of bird flu in Beijing -- the country's first fatal case of avian influenza in nearly a year -- after handling ducks she had bought in a market.

The death brought to 21 the number of people in China who have died of the virus since 2003. Another 10 contracted it but survived, not including the latest case.

Bird flu outbreaks tend to happen in the winter months, when low temperatures create more favourable conditions for the virus to spread.

China says 2-yr-old girl confirmed with bird flu
18 Jan 2009 01:50:21 GMT

(Adds details, statement from Ministry of Health)
BEIJING, Jan 18 (Reuters) - A two-year-old girl has been confirmed to be infected with bird flu in north China's Shanxi Province, Xinhua news agency said on Sunday, citing a provincial government official, in the second case in as many weeks.
The girl, surnamed Peng, was found ill on Jan. 7 in central Hunan Province and was taken to hospital in Luliang City of Shanxi on Jan. 11, Xinhua said, citing an unnamed official with the Shanxi provincial health department.
The girl had tested positive for the H5N1 strain of avian influenza and "was in critical condition," Xinhua cited the official as saying.
"All people who have had close contact with her are under strict medical observation ... Up to now, no abnormal symptoms have been found," a statement on China's Health Ministry website (www.moh.gov.cn) said.
The Health Ministry had notified the World Health Organisation, authorities in Hong Kong and Macau, and some other countries, the statement said.
China confirmed earlier this month a woman infected with bird flu had died in Beijing after buying nine ducks at a market in Hebei province, which surrounds the Chinese capital, sparking emergency checks of local poultry markets.
The H5N1 remains largely a disease among birds but experts fear it could change into a form that is easily transmitted from person to person, and spark a pandemic that can kill millions of people worldwide.
At least 21 people have died of bird flu out of 32 people infected in China. (Reporting by Ian Ransom; Editing by Bill Tarrant)

Girl in China critically ill with bird flu

BEIJING (AP) — A 2-year-old girl in northern China has tested positive for bird flu and is in critical condition — the second case of human infection in a month.

The girl fell ill on Jan. 7 in central Hunan province and was taken to a hospital by her grandparents four days later after she returned home to Shanxi province, the Health Ministry said in a notice on its Web site late Saturday.

Tests confirmed she was infected with the H5N1 bird flu virus, it said. It did not say how she was infected or what she was doing in Hunan.

All the people who had close contact with the girl were under medical observation, the ministry said, and so far no one else has been found ill.

The case comes at a worrisome time for authorities as tens of millions of people are on the move traveling between cities and rural hometowns for Chinese New Year, which begins on Jan. 26. The Agricultural Ministry has said it will step up checks before the holiday.

A 19-year-old woman died from the bird flu virus at the beginning of January in a Beijing hospital after contact with poultry. The World Health Organization said the case did not appear to signal a new public health threat.

Health officials worry the H5N1 virus could mutate into a form that could spread easily among people.

According to the latest WHO tally, bird flu has killed 248 people worldwide since 2003, including 21 in China.

F, 2-year-old and currently residing in Xiaoyi City, Luliang Prefecture, Shanxi Province.

January 7, 2009 the incidence in Hunan, January 11 with the grandparents back to Shanxi, condition worsened after the January 14 Fenyang treatment in hospitals in Shanxi Province, with no significant symptomatic improvement after treatment, was on the 14th later transferred to Children's Hospital of Shanxi Province.

The above translation describes a confirmed H5N1 patient who is in critical condition. She is currently in Shanxi, although the initial incident is said to have been in Hunan (see updated map). This case follows the fatal case (19F) in Beijing, which may have been part of a cluster involving a health care worker at the hospital.

Although it is unclear where the patient resided in Hunan, clade 7 has been isolated from both regions previously. Clade 7 was reported in Jiangsu last month and has caused a previous case in Beijing (in 2003).

More information on the circumstances surrounding the infection would be useful. China has not recently reported H5N1 in poultry in Hunan or Shanxi, raising concerns about the source of the infection, as well as reporting of H5N1 in poultry or wild birds in China.

More information on the circumstances associated with this case, as well as sequence data associated with the fatal case in Beijing would be useful.

The girl, surnamed Peng, was found ill on Jan. 7 in the central Hunan Province.

The above comments describe the most recent H5N1 confirmed case in China. She was infected right after the patient in Beijing died, who was infected a couple weeks after the outbreaks in Jiangsu. All three incidents (see updated map) involved H5N1 confirmed hosts in the absence of dead poultry.

The outbreaks in Jiangsu were detected during routine surveillance. As noted in the OIE report, there were no dead birds. The H5N1 in the Jiangsu outbreaks was clade 7. Clade 7 is quite distinct from clade 1 and clade 2 which are the two clades that have accounted for the vast majority of human cases and outbreaks. However, clade 7 had caused the first confirmed case in China in Beijing in 2003. It has been reported in poultry outbreaks in northern China are provinces near Beijing, as well as Hunan province.

The history of outbreaks and the temporal relationship to the Beijing case suggest clade 7 may have been involved in the Beijing infection(s). The same is true for the Hunan case.

Clade 7 is cause for concern because it has caused at least one human case previously and was in asymptomatic birds in Jiangsu. Moreover, it has caused problems previously in vaccinated flocks. The genetic differences between clade 7 and clade 1 or 2 can produce vaccine mismatches which generate asymptomatic birds which shed H5N1 that can infect other birds and humans. This creates conditions for silent transmission in birds and cases that have no clear linkage to dying poultry.

China has not filed any OIE reports since the Jiangsu outbreak in December, suggesting H5N1 was not detected in poultry culled in the Beijing area. Detecting H5N1 in asymptomatic birds is difficult, so the absence of H5N1 positive birds does not necessarily signal the absence of H5N1.

The widespread detection of H5N1 in China in the absence of dead or dying poultry is cause for concern.

China confirms toddler infected with bird flu

BEIJING (Reuters) - A two-year-old girl is in critical condition at a hospital in northern China after becoming infected with the H5N1 bird flu virus, state media said on Sunday, the second case in China in as many weeks.
The girl, surnamed Peng, was found ill on January 7 in central Hunan Province and taken to a hospital in her home province of Shanxi on January 11, Xinhua news agency said, citing an unnamed official with the provincial health department.
The Health Ministry did not say how the girl had become infected. There have not been any reports of outbreaks of the virus among birds in Hunan since May 2007.
The H5N1 virus remains largely a disease among birds but experts fear it could change into a form that is easily transmitted among humans, and spark a pandemic that could kill millions of people worldwide.

With the world's biggest poultry population and hundreds of millions of backyard birds, China is seen as critical in the fight to contain bird flu.
Its Health Ministry said in a statement on its website (www.moh.gov.cn) that the girl was transferred to another hospital after her symptoms grew worse and authorities confirmed she had been infected with the virus on Saturday.
"Currently, the girl's condition is critical. Shanxi health departments are currently fighting to save her with the guidance of a team of health experts," the Health Ministry said.
"All people who have had close contact with her are under strict medical observation ... Up to now, no abnormal symptoms have been found," it said, adding that the World Health Organization, and health authorities in Hong Kong, Macau and some other countries had been notified.
Calls placed to health departments in Shanxi province went unanswered.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said China's Health Ministry had notified them of the case, but could not provide more details.
"We are staying in close contact with the Health Ministry," a spokeswoman from WHO's China office told Reuters.
After not reporting a single human infection in almost a year, China has now confirmed two cases in as many weeks.
Health authorities earlier this month said a woman infected with bird flu had died in Beijing after buying ducks at a market in Hebei province, which surrounds the Chinese capital, sparking emergency checks of local poultry markets.
Experts said the case was not unexpected as the virus is more active during the cooler months between October and March, but said it pointed to holes in surveillance of the virus in poultry.
China's Agriculture Ministry last week said it had found no bird flu cases among poultry in Beijing or other areas surrounding the city during checks after the woman's death.
Since the H5N1 virus resurfaced in Asia in 2003, it has infected 391 people, killing 247 of them, according to WHO figures released in mid-December.
The toddler's infection brings China's total to 32 human bird flu cases, of which at least 21 people have died.

(CNN) -- A 2-year-old girl in northern China is in critical condition after testing positive for bird flu, state media said Sunday. It is China's second confirmed case of the virus this month.
Human-to-human transmission of avian flu is rare, but in some cases, the virus has passed from poultry to humans.

The girl fell ill on January 7 in the central Hunan province and was taken to her home province of Shanxi in northern China, the state-run news agency Xinhua said.
The report did not say how the girl became infected.
On January 5, a 19-year-old Beijing woman died of bird flu after handling poultry, officials said.
Xinhua said the woman bought nine ducks at a market in Beijing's neighboring Hebei province and cleaned their organs.
Since the end of 2003, the H5N1 virus has infected numerous species of birds in more than 60 countries in Asia, Europe and Africa. It has not been found in birds in North or South America, including the Caribbean, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization.
Don't Miss
The country reported its first human infection case in 2005. So far, 30 cases have been confirmed. Twenty of them have been fatal, Xinhua said. On Friday, China announced it was setting up a nationwide network to test for the virus.
Human-to-human transmission of avian flu is rare, but in some cases, the virus has passed from poultry to humans. It has killed more than 200 people since 2003.
Officials worry the virus could mutate and become a deadly pandemic.

This thread should have Hunan title. There has been no link found at this time in Shanxi (although looking for poultry deaths is NOT how H5N1 in asymptomatic birds will be found).

A 2 year old girl has been confirmed to be infected with bird flu in north
China's Shanxi Province, a provincial government official said Saturday [17
Jan 2009].

The girl was found ill on 7 Jan 2009 in the central Hunan Province. Her
grandparents took her to Luliang City in Shanxi [province] on 11 Jan 2009.
She was taken to the Fenyang Hospital on Wednesday [14 Jan 2009] and then
to the Shanxi Children's Hospital on Wednesday night after she got worse,
said an official with the Shanxi provincial health department. The patient
was in critical condition, the official said.

According to the test result of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and
Prevention, the girl tested positive for the H5N1 strain of avian influenza.

The people who had close contact with the patient are under medical
observation. No one has been found ill so far, Xinhua [News Agency] reported.

A 2 year old girl has been confirmed to be infected with bird flu in north
China's Shanxi Province, Xinhua News Agency said on Sunday [18 Jan 2009],
citing a provincial government official, in the 2nd case in as many weeks.
The girl was found ill on 7 Jan 2009 in central Hunan Province and was
taken to hospital in Luliang City of Shanxi on 11 Jan 2009, Xinhua said,
citing an unnamed official with the Shanxi provincial health department.
The girl had tested positive for the H5N1 strain of avian influenza and
"was in critical condition," Xinhua cited the official as saying.

"All people who have had close contact with her are under strict medical
observation ... Up to now, no abnormal symptoms have been found," a
statement on China's Health Ministry website <http://www.moh.gov.cn> said.
The Health Ministry had notified the World Health Organization, authorities
in Hong Kong and Macau, and some other countries, the statement said.

China confirmed earlier this month [January 2009] that a woman infected
with bird flu had died in Beijing after buying 9 ducks at a market in Hebei
province, which surrounds the Chinese capital, sparking emergency checks of
local poultry markets. H5N1 influenza remains largely a disease among
birds, but experts fear it could change into a form that is easily
transmitted from person to person and spark a pandemic that could kill
millions of people worldwide.

At least 21 people have died of bird flu out of 32 people infected in China.

Hi Farmer,
This particular article, is very mysterious. I can't define what they mean by a few things. I would normally think they were talking about seasonal flu. But this sentence is right after an excerpt on H5N1. I do not know, honestly, anything more than what you are reading. How do I interpret it? With a shrug, , until I can find more stories to collaborate it.

The article is an English translation of a Vietnamese news article presumably based on translated Chinese media reports from China. I would doubt that Vietnam has special access to additional information about human cases in China. I take it as a multi language translation problem. I would be more concern with similar translations from media reports originating in China.

China reports 2nd bird flu death this year

By AUDRA ANG – 54 minutes ago
BEIJING (AP) — A 16-year-old boy has been infected with the H5N1 virus, the Health Ministry said Monday, the fourth reported case this month. Bird flu has killed two people in China this year and authorities warn the risk of infection may go up during the Lunar New Year as families gather for traditional meals that often include poultry.
The teenager, a student surnamed Wu, fell ill in his hometown in Guizhou province in the country's southwest on Jan. 8 and was currently in critical condition, the ministry said on its Web site.
It said the boy had been in contact with domestic poultry that had died from illness but did not elaborate. Those in close contact with Wu have not shown signs of infection, the ministry said.
The announcement followed the death of a woman, whose surname was Zhang, living in Jinan, the capital of Shandong province. She died Saturday, the ministry said. The notice did not say how Zhang, 27, who fell sick on Jan. 5, contracted the virus.
Less than two weeks ago, a 19-year-old woman died from the H5N1 virus in a Beijing hospital after buying and cleaning ducks in a market in a neighboring province. It was the first death from bird flu since last February.
Also Monday, a 2-year-old girl was in critical condition in the northern province of Shanxi with bird flu. Ta Kung Pao, a Hong Kong newspaper backed by the mainland's communist authorities, reported that the girl's mother died recently of what doctors "highly suspected" was also bird flu. The paper did not give any other details, and Shanxi health officials refused to comment on the mother's death.
The girl tested positive for H5N1 after falling ill on Jan. 7, the Health Ministry said.
The cases come at a worrisome time for Chinese authorities as tens of millions of people are on the move between cities and rural hometowns for Lunar New Year, the country's biggest holiday, which begins on Jan. 26.
Dishes prepared from freshly slaughtered chicken and duck feature prominently in celebration feasts. That means a potentially greater risk of exposure to sick birds as people shop in markets and handle poultry or when the birds are transported to be sold, said the World Health Organization's Beijing office.
The WHO said it was prepared to provide technical assistance to China if asked and urged people to take precautions against bird flu infections by washing their hands after handling raw meat and ensuring all poultry is well cooked.
While bird flu remains hard for humans to catch — with most cases linked to contact with infected birds — scientists have warned that if outbreaks among poultry are not controlled, the virus may mutate into a form more easily passed between people.
Chinese Health Ministry spokesman Mao Qun'an said last week that the public should minimize contact with poultry, especially sick or dead ones, and that medical institutions should step up surveillance of flu cases, especially during the New Year holiday.
Health officials say that the winter months can bring an increase in bird flu cases because the H5N1 virus can survive longer in cold weather and have a bigger chance of infecting poultry — and possibly humans. Winter is also when many people in rural areas bring live poultry into their homes to protect them from the cold.
The virus, which has ravaged poultry stocks across Asia since 2003, has continued a path of infection.
Last week, Nepal reported that chickens tested positive for H5N1 there — the first time known instance of the virus in the Himalayan nation.
In Vietnam, animal health officials said they detected the bird flu virus in chickens smuggled from neighboring China. An 8-year-old girl was also reported sick with H5N1 earlier this month, the first human case reported in the country in nearly a year.
According to the latest World Health Organization figures, bird flu has killed 248 people worldwide since 2003.

China reports second bird flu death this year

Associated Press - January 19, 2009 8:43 AM ET
BEIJING (AP) - With the Chinese new year coming soon, the World Health Organization is worrying about the spread of bird flu.
Two people have died from bird flu this year, and state media says a 2-year-old girl is in critical condition with bird flu. It's "highly suspected" her mother's recent death is also linked to bird flu.
The cases come at a worrisome time for Chinese authorities. Tens of millions of people will be on the move between cities and rural hometowns for next week's Lunar New Year, the country's biggest holiday.
Dishes prepared from freshly slaughtered chicken and duck figure prominently in celebration feasts. The WHO says the risk of being exposed to sick birds will go up as people shop in markets and handle poultry, or when the birds are transported to be sold.
