  • Shannon Dawn Dobbie - Epitaph

To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield
By Frank Baird, The Ottawa Citizen May 30, 2010 8:21 AM

Shannon Dawn Dobbie was born on April 9, 1991, to parents Ron and Denise Dobbie of Hyndman Road, near Spencerville. She died on Nov. 3, 2009, at the age of 18, of complications from the H1N1 virus.

Shannon's short life was exceptional because of her attitude and her outlook, more than her condition. She was born with Osteogenisis Imperfecta, a genetic disorder characterized by very fragile bones. At birth, Shannon had 13 broken bones and there were many more in the years ahead. A mere startle could result in a broken arm, a brush against her pyjamas could break her leg. Though never able to walk, she zoomed through life making a lasting impression on everyone she met. Shannon was outgoing and enthusiastic.

A petite Grade 1 student at North Edwardsburg Public School, Shannon weighed only 14 pounds and wore size 24 months clothes, but there was nothing small about her personality. She was overjoyed to go to school and wanted to take part in activities her classmates pursued. Always busy, she joined Brownies and the Easter Seals Telethon as the Easter Seals Tammy representing Kemptville and area.
