Flu claims two more victims

Thailand has reported two more deaths from influenza type-A (H1N1), bringing the number of fatalities from the virus to nine.
Preliminary test results on a 58-year-old man from Bangkok, who died yesterday, showed he was infected with the H1N1 flu strain and suffering from a lung infection.
The man suffered from fever, coughing and fatigue on June 30. He sought medical treatment at Rajavithi Hospital a day later and was found to have kidney failure, high blood pressure and gout.
The other case involved an eight-year-old girl in Phetchaburi province who suffered from leukemia.
The girl was admitted to Phra Chom Klao Hospital in Phetchaburi town on June 23 after exhibiting flu-like symptoms.
Her condition deteriorated and she died on Thursday.
Test results on Sunday confirmed she was infected with the H1N1 virus.
The daily rise in confirmed cases and deaths from H1N1 has worried flu experts, causing them to question the effectiveness of the ministry's campaign to combat the outbreak.
"The ministry's repeated statements that H1N1 could be lethal only among those with chronic health problems is wrong," said Therawat Hemajutha, an expert on emerging diseases at Chulalongkorn University's faculty of medicine.
"The public should be aware that people are equally vulnerable to the virus, particularly young adults."
More than half of those who have died from H1N1 did not have chronic health problems, according to the latest studies in Mexico and the US, Dr Therawat said.
