MYSORE: A 57-year-old man who had tested positive for A(H1N1) influenza died at a private hospital here on Monday. The deceased has been identified as Shankar, a resident of Vijayanagar. He was admitted to Columbia Asia Hospital on Sunday from the government-run K.R. Hospital.
District Health Officer Raju said that the patient had other illnesses, including Parkinson?s disease, and he may have died owing to other complications.
The positive test result for A(H1N1) influenza came on August 29 but he was being administered Tamiflu from August 21 at B.M. Hospital where he was admitted following flu symptoms. He was on ventilator during treatment and was recently taken off the ventilator after his condition became stable.
However, doctors continued to administer Tamiflu. His swabs were sent to NIMHANS for the second time on August 30 to confirm whether he had recovered from the disease.
Dr. Raju said, ?His death from A(H1N1) can be confirmed only after we get the lab results of the swabs sent for the second time. If the reports show that he tested positive for A(H1N1), then we can confirm it as an A(H1N1) death.?
A press release from Columbia Asia Hospital said that Shankar was admitted to the isolation ICU on August 29. ?The patient was admitted here after suffering 15 days of flu-like symptoms. He tested positive for A(H1N1) on August 29. Additionally, he was diabetic, hypertensive with arrhythmia and was taking treatment for Parkinson?s disease since the last five years. His condition deteriorated on August 31 and he succumbed to cardiac arrest around 6 p.m. on Monday,? the release added.
