Health officials are confirming three deaths linked to H1N1 influenza in Saskatchewan.

Two of the three people who died last month were children.

The Regina Qu?Appelle Health Region says all three had underlying health conditions.

As of Dec. 28, more than 160 cases of the flu were confirmed in the province, with most of them being the H1N1 strain of the virus.

Number of influenza, H1N1-related deaths doubles

Six dead, 18 in Intensive Care Units with the flu


The provincial government has confirmed the number of deaths connected to influenza has increased to a half-dozen.

An update from the health ministry Tuesday afternoon revealed that there are now six people in Saskatchewan who have died after contracting the flu virus. That's an increase from the three fatal cases reported less than a week ago. The H1N1 flu is the predominant strain this year.

Another 18 patients in Intensive Care Units throughout the province also have confirmed cases of the flu. There are at least 336 cases where flu is suspected but hasn't been confirmed.

Family members of a Regina man who recently died after contracting H1N1 says people should not take their health for granted.

"I've never had the shot but we're definitely researching it now," said Saskatoon resident Grant Closson, whose cousin Ryan Walter died on the weekend due in part to H1N1.

"Being a father of two myself, if it's a simple preventative measure, maybe it's worth getting."
