Colombia reports sixth death from H1N1 influenza

BOGOTA, July 11. - A young man became the sixth victim of the deadly H1N1 influenza in Colombia, reported Saturday by the Ministry of Social Protection.

The couple consulted on July 6 because of a fever, cough and difficulty breathing in Bogota, the ministry said in a press release.

"The patient was diagnosed suspect pandemic virus AH1N1 was hospitalized immediately and started treatment including antiviral and given the progress of their case was treated in an intensive care unit for medical specialists, but unfortunately died," he added.

The ministry also warned that are to follow the indigenous population which was part of a new baby affected by influenza and died in the Colombian capital, as two girls have symptoms of influenza.

The disease has killed over 400 people and infected more than 95,500 worldwide, according to latest figures from the World Health Organization (WHO).

In South America, Argentina is the country with the largest number of deaths from the virus.

Globally, the United States is a nation with more cases and deaths reported.

The deceased lived in the northwest of Bogota, and earned his living by selling fish. Was separated, had two sons and lived with seven people. None so far has shown symptoms.


"This is a young adult man, who lives in Bogota, who consulted on July 6 with fever, cough, breathlessness, malaise and decay," the ministry said in a statement.

The patient was hospitalized and was immediately initiated a comprehensive treatment, which is included an antiviral.

Due to his poor health he was transferred and treated in an intensive care unit by doctors but died.

According to the Ministry, Colombia recorded 165 confirmed cases of the virus and there have been six deaths: five in Bogota and one in Soacha.

Confirmation of death is the sixth one days after they knew the death of an Indian baby, with 48 days of birth.

The baby was diagnosed with bronchiolitis and was suspected to be suffering from whooping cough. To worsen his health, was referred to a tertiary hospital care. After medical examinations were held sobreinfectada bronchiolitis, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and ventilatory failure.

The lowest was in the Unit and Pediatric Intensive City, despite the city that was provided, died on July 6 last. The final cause of death was pneumonia and pulmonary hypertension.

On May 3 last confirmed the first case of Colombia infected with the virus of influenza A, a man of Zipaquira, who had been in Cancun. A month later, on June 4, the first death was that of a woman of 23 years in Bogota.

Health authorities advise the public to continue with preventive measures such as washing of hands with soap and water. If you have flu, use mask, care at home, take plenty of fluids and seek medical advice in case of high fever of more than two days of evolution or any symptoms of shortness of breath or chest pain.
