7th anniversary of deadly 2005 earthquake observed

ISLAMABAD: The 7th anniversary of the devastating 2005 earthquake that hit northwest and Azad Kashmir and killed over 70,000 people was observed on Monday.

Gatherings were organised in the affected areas to pay homage to the victims of one of the worst earthquakes in the country.

The 7.6 tremors on Richter scale shook parts of Pakistan at 08:52 a.m. local time on Oct 8, 2005.

Officials said the earthquake toll reached 74,698, a figure higher than the massive scale of destruction of the southwestern Quetta earthquake in 1935.

More than 100,000 people were injured in the 2005 quake, which destroyed villages, roads, schools, hospitals, bridges and caused massive land sliding in the most affected areas....

Muzaffarabad, Oct 8: People in Pakistan administered Kashmir (PaK) observed silence for one minute and offered special prayers on Monday for thousands of victims of October 8, 2005 earthquake, amid conflicting claims by government functionaries and civil society activists regarding reconstruction in the affected areas.
In Muzaffarabad, which was worst hit, an alliance of local political and religious parties and civil society organisations staged a sit-in to protest against the ?held up? reconstruction process.
However, brushing aside their allegations Prime Minister Chaudhry Abdul Majeed vowed that the governments in Muzaffarabad and Islamabad were determined to leave no stone unturned to accomplish the task ?on a war footing.?..
