BANGKOK, Jan 18 (TNA) - A panel studying guidelines to tackle the bird flu problem has in principle approved the use of bird flu vaccine in some areas if they are hard-hit by the outbreak.

Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry deputy permanent secretary Yukol Limlamthong said the panel agreed that the bird flu vaccine should be used to control the disease in poultry if the outbreak occurs in three to eight sub-districts.

However, vaccinations should be done within two consecutive weeks to contain the outbreak and prevent human loss, according to Mr. Yukol.

The recommendation will be submitted to the Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister and the National Avian Flu Committee for their consideration.

However, he said he sees no need to use the vaccine now but officials will implement existing control measures more strictly.

Agriculture and Co-operatives Minister Thira Sutabutr said the ministry has a policy priority to prevent the bird flu this year, including containing bird flu infections in fowl no more than ten locations.

The bird flu has been found at one spot so far this year. More than 2,000 ducks were culled in Phitsanulok last week after the H5N1 virus was detected in the flock.

Yukol said agriculture ministry officials have inspected every area of the country twice a year since 2004 and this year, the survey began Januanry 3 will be completed February 3.

Speaking about upgrading poultry farms, he said domestic chickens have been separated from wild birds, as well as human habitations. The hygienic standards of poultry farms have been upgraded to meet hygienic standards.

Over a hundred thousand fighting cocks have been registered with the authorities, he added. In addition, free range ducks are now being enclosed. (TNA)-E004
