Alberta Health Services officials are reminding residents about the importance of receiving the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine.

One case of the measles has been confirmed in Calgary and there is a recent outbreak in B.C.


There are pockets of the province where Alberta reports low vaccination rates putting non-immunized individuals in these areas at increased risk for certain diseases, including measles, said Dr. Gerry Predy, AHS Medical Officer of Health in a May 7 news release.

?With the outbreak of measles in B.C. and the knowledge that we now have a confirmed case in Alberta, we need to be proactive to prevent further spread,? said Dr. Predy. ?We strongly encourage parents to ensure their children are up to date with all immunizations...?

Alberta Health Services has confirmed a case of the measles in the Calgary area.

A child under five years old, who was vaccinated, is the person with the disease.

That's prompting the health authority to encourage people to get vaccinated, if they haven't already.

Anyone who visited Huntington Superstore between 12:45 and 3 p.m., as well as Crossiron Mills Mall in Balzac between 1:45 and 7 p.m. Monday, May 3rd may have been exposed to the virus.

This new case of the measles in the Calgary area, comes just a short time after an isolated outbreak in the Vancouver area...

Calgary?s measles outbreak is spreading.

Alberta Health Services has confirmed four new cases of measles in the Calgary-area and is following-up directly with individuals who may have been in close contact with the confirmed cases, the government has announced.

Including these four new cases, AHS has now confirmed five cases of measles disease in the Calgary-area in the past two weeks. In 2009, only one case of measles was confirmed province-wide.

?Clearly, we are seeing a higher than average number of measles cases in Alberta at this time,? says Dr. Gerry Predy, AHS Medical Officer of Health.

..."None of our cases have a direct link to BC, no Travel, no connection with any one else was ill. That's another indication to us the virus could be showing up elsewhere, in Calgary, within Alberta." explains Dr. Judy Macdonald, Medical Officer of Health.

She tells iNews 880 even thought it is the same strain as the outbreak in BC, the two don't seem to be connected.

Macdonald says besides the five confirmed cases, AHS is keeping an eye on several more possible cases. (chqr, twd)
