Mass gatherings resulting in swine flu

Facts came to light when doctors treating patients recorded their travel history
Mass gathering of public is triggering cases of swine flue in the capital and elsewhere this October. Of the 30 swine flu positive patients, who were admitted to Gandhi Hospital this month, majority had recently returned from Tirupati while others had taken part in the Ganesh immersion at Hyderabad.

The sudden increase in swine flu cases came after the Ganesh immersion procession on September 29 and the first Brahmotsavams, between September 17 and 27, in Tirupati.

This startling fact came to light when doctors treating patients in Gandhi Hospital recorded their travel history.

Between this January and September, the city has witnessed close to 25 swine flu deaths while the number of swine flu positive cases during the same period reached the 190 mark.

Swine flu cases on the rise in Hyderabad

The number of swine flu cases in the state capital is steadily rising as 15 fresh cases of A (H1N1) influenza have been reported in the last 10 days, taking the number of infected persons to 100 this year. Last year, only six such cases were reported.

The figures could be more as several patients suspected to be H1N1 positive are undergoing treatment at various government and private hospitals. The Government Chest Hospital at Erragada is reportedly not admitting swine flu patients due to lack of infrastructure. Susceptibility of patients undergoing treatment for various other lung ailments is another reason the hospital is turning away patients. Given the air-borne nature of the flu, there are chances of it spreading to other patients, even if the suspected swine-flu sufferer is treated in an isolation ward.
