Pertussis outbreak hits Colorado City

COLORADO CITY ? More than 100 confirmed cases of pertussis ? commonly known as whooping cough ? have been reported in the Colorado City area, according to Mohave County Sup. Buster Johnson.

Johnson, not the county health department, disclosed the outbreak in a press release he sent to area news organizations. The release states that ?a few cases? of pertussis had been confirmed in Kingman, Bullhead City and Lake Havasu City, but that ?there have been 114 confirmed cases in the Colorado City area with 16 new cases in the last two weeks along...?

SCOTTSDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

A Phoenix area school district sent parents letters and e-mails, warning them that a pair of children contracted "pertussis."

Both cases were found at Liberty Elementary school in the Paradise Valley Unified School System...

TUCSON - Statistics show Whooping Cough cases are up this year in Pima County, but an expanded definition of a "case" may be increasing those numbers...

There is an interesting situation with the number that makes it difficult to compare with previous years. As of Jan. 1, AZ Dept of Health expanded the definition of a "case" which means that more cases are being reported than in prior years. This makes it difficult to take the increase for this year at face value when compared with previous years...

...This one is at Andrada Polytechnic High School. It's the first reported case at the school.

Empire High School has seen three confirmed cases in just one month...

PHOENIX -- State health officials want you to go to the doctor to get vaccinated. It's because pertussis, which is also known as whooping cough, is going around.

Jessica Rigler of the Arizona Department of Health Services says that as of Nov. 7, Arizona has been slammed with about 12,000 cases of whooping cough in this latest outbreak.

"The Phoenix area has about 400 cases right now," said Rigler. "We've got a pretty large outbreak going on up north in Mohave County. They make up about 580 of the cases." ...

The Kyrene School District is warning parents that their schools are seeing an outbreak of whooping cough.

The school district sent out a letter out to parents warning them about the outbreak.

It says there have been several cases, but no exact number was given...

Whooping cough cases are at an eight-year high in Pima County, and the Vail area southeast of Tucson continues to suffer the deepest consequences of the ongoing problem.

Forty-one cases of whooping cough have been reported in Tucson-area schools since June, and 63 percent of them have been in the 12,000-student Vail School District, county health data show. Sycamore Elementary School has had the most cases ? six students and one staff member since June...
