What you can do

It is important to protect yourself and your family when there is a dengue outbreak near your home. Taking the right steps can help stop the spread of dengue.
Empty the water from containers around your home and yard so dengue mosquitoes can't breed. This includes pot plant bases, tyres, buckets and kids toys.
Use insect repellent containing DEET or Picaridin, particularly during daylight hours when the dengue mosquito is most active.
Use plug-in mosquito repellent devices.
Spray insect surface spray around your home in dark places where the dengue mosquito likes to hide, such as under furniture, inside cupboards and behind curtains.
If you or anyone in your household has any symptoms of dengue apply insect repellent to stop the dengue mosquito biting, and see a doctor immediately.

Health authorities declare outbreak of dengue fever after new strain of unknown origin identified in Cairns
CAITLIN DRYSDALE THE COURIER-MAIL DECEMBER 26, 2013 12:00AM

A NEW strain of dengue fever has been identified in two Cairns patients, prompting Public Health to declare an outbreak.

The cases originated in the now high-risk areas of Parramatta Park and Cairns North.

Tropical Public Health Services director Dr Steven Donohue confirmed that the cases were separate from the strain which has now infected 14 people in the Port Douglas and Mossman area.

The new strain is known as Dengue Type One and its origin is unknown.

"We get so many tourists here it's hard to track the source," Dr Donohue said.
