Cairns residents urged to take precautions as two go down with dengue fever

QUEENSLAND?S first outbreak of dengue fever for the year has been identified, with two confirmed cases and a suspected case in the Cairns suburb of Edmonton.

The Cairns-based Tropical Public Health Services director Richard Gair urged residents to take precautions to avoid the potentially deadly mosquito-borne disease, which causes a fever with severe headaches and muscle and joint pain.

What you can do

It is important to protect yourself and your family when there is a dengue outbreak near your home. Taking the right steps can help stop the spread of dengue.
Empty the water from containers around your home and yard so dengue mosquitoes can't breed. This includes pot plant bases, tyres, buckets and kids toys.
Use insect repellent containing DEET or Picaridin, particularly during daylight hours when the dengue mosquito is most active.
Use plug-in mosquito repellent devices.
Spray insect surface spray around your home in dark places where the dengue mosquito likes to hide, such as under furniture, inside cupboards and behind curtains.
If you or anyone in your household has any symptoms of dengue apply insect repellent to stop the dengue mosquito biting, and see a doctor immediately.

Cairns' dengue fever outbreak spreads to Trinity Beach

Dengue fever has spread from Cairns' southern suburbs to the northern beaches.

The outbreak had been contained to Edmonton since it began two weeks ago but a person has fallen ill with the mosquito-borne virus in Trinity Beach.

It brings the total number of cases so far this season to eight.

Tropical Public Health Services' Dr Richard Gair said it appeared the latest case was linked to the Edmonton outbreak...

AN outbreak of dengue fever in the tropical north Queensland city of Cairns has spread to a third suburb.

A NINTH case of the mosquito-borne virus was confirmed in the suburb of Mooroobool on Monday afternoon, health authorities say.
Eight others have contracted the virus in Edmonton and Trinity Beach this wet season...

Dengue outbreak rises to 32 cases

Tropical Public Health Services (Cairns) has this afternoon confirmed a further five cases of locally acquired dengue fever in the Tully / El Arish area.

The additional cases takes the total number of locally acquired dengue cases this season to 32, with 20 cases in the Tully / El Arish outbreak and 12 cases in Cairns.

The Dengue Action Response Team has been on the ground responding to the outbreak in Tully / El Arish since February 10...
 
Dengue fever cases rise in north Qld

THE number of cases of mosquito-borne dengue fever in Queensland's tropical north has risen to 50.
QUEENSLAND Health says 14 people have been infected in Cairns and 36 in Tully, Innisfail and El Arish this wet season.
The most recent cases were confirmed this week in Innisfail and the Cairns suburb of Edmonton.
Public Health Physician Dr Steven Donohue reminded those in the far north to remain vigilant and check their homes for any potential dengue mosquito breeding grounds.

Mosquito borne disease hits Townsville

AUTHORITIES are scrambling to contain a shock outbreak of dengue fever after the first locally acquired case in more than a year was detected.

Townsville Hospital and Health Service?s reference laboratory in Brisbane confirmed a Hermit Park resident tested positive for dengue yesterday afternoon, signalling the beginning of a surprise midyear outbreak.

THHS public health physician Dr Steven Donohue said the woman has not travelled outside the city indicating this was a local transmission of the virus, not an imported case.

The last official diagnosis in Townsville was on June 29 on the back of last year?s dengue outbreak in the city and Charters Towers.

In more recent years dengue outbreaks have been confined to northern Queensland. Over the past 10 years large outbreaks have occurred in the Torres Strait, Cairns, Mossman, Innisfail, Tully, Townsville and Charters Towers.
Dengue outbreaks occur annually in north Queensland and residents need to be vigilant to ensure dengue mosquitoes are not breeding on their property.

Dengue fever cases spike in SA, Government urges travellers to protect themselves

A spike in the number of dengue fever cases in South Australia has prompted a warning from the State Government urging travellers to protect themselves against the disease.

Health Minister Jack Snelling said there had been 58 cases of dengue fever recorded so far this year compared to 41 cases a year ago.

Three-quarters of those cases contracted the disease while holidaying in Indonesia, particularly while in Bali...
