Two cases of Dengue fever have been confirmed in New Providence and the number of people with symptoms associated with the illness has increased sharply in recent days, Minister of Health Dr. Hubert Minnis said yesterday.

Speaking at a press conference at the Ministry of Health, Minnis said all the relevant agencies have been proactive in attempting to stem the transmission of the disease.

He said 11 possible cases are being tested and at least half could come back positive...

'Dengue fever' symptoms risel

THE number of persons showing symptoms of dengue fever continues to rise at Princess Margaret Hospital.

Speaking yesterday about the increase of patients with dengue fever symptoms, Dr Collin Bullard, Chief of Service for the Accident and Emergency at Princess Margaret Hospital (PHM), said there has been some "outbreak" but results are needed to confirm what type of viral illness is being experienced.

"What we are seeing here at PHM," he said, "is a lot of patients presenting with symptoms that are consistent with dengue fever - it has been in the hundreds, 70 to 100 people a day presenting with these symptoms."

"There has been a definite increase in the number and it is hard to say where this is going and we have reached the peak of this outbreak, but right now we are seeing a significant number of cases," said Dr Bullard.

According to Dr Bullard dengue fever is a viral illness transmitted by mosquitos, which cannot be spread from person to person.

He continued that symptoms include fever, headache, chills, eye pain and general body and muscle aches, similar to that of the flu.

Because the accident and emergency department is becoming "overwhelmed" with the number of patients it receives on a daily basis, Dr Bullard said he is encouraging the public to go to their local clinics for treatment.

"Accident and emergency is a very busy place as it is and this on top of that has just compounded a problem," Dr Bullard said.

While awaiting blood test results patients are being diagnosed with acute viral illness based on their clinical presentations.

Increasing from the two cases of dengue fever confirmed by the Minister of Health in a press conference last week, Dr Bullard said there have been 34 confirmed cases and another 80 blood samples have been sent off to Trinidad for testing...

Suspected cases of dengue fever 'overwhelm' health services

PRIVATE medical facilities in Nassau have become "inundated" with suspected cases of dengue fever as the number of confirmed cases continues to climb.

Doctor's Hospital CEO Charles Sealey denied reports that the hospital had reached maximum bed occupancy yesterday; however he admitted that the facility's emergency room had received "a lot" of persons with dengue symptoms.

Tribune sources within the private hospital maintain that all beds were filled last night as staff struggled with overwhelming numbers of suspected cases.

Mr Sealey said: "We've had a good amount of persons come through - certainly our emergency room - a lot related to potential dengue fever cases.

"We are not closed," he added, "we're able to collect patients."

Meanwhile, both wholesale and retail pharmaceutical distributors have noted a significant increase in pesticide and insect repellent sales since last week...

...The number of confirmed cases of dengue fever stood at 90 on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, officials at the Princess Margaret Hospital reported that it was receiving up to 100 persons a day who showed symptoms of the illness...

195 cases of dengue fever confirmed

The number of confirmed cases of dengue fever has more than doubled in the past two days, according to Health Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis, who confirmed that up to yesterday there were 195 cases.

On Tuesday, the number of confirmed cases stood at 90.

Minnis held a press conference yesterday at the Ministry of Health to give an update on the outbreak.

In recent days, public and private hospitals and clinics have been flooded by people showing symptoms of the virus.

Over the past two weeks, nearly 600 people have shown up to those medical facilities with dengue fever-like symptoms, according to Stephanie Dean, senior nurse at the Public Hospitals Authority.

Symptoms include fever, headache, eye pain and joint pain...

Holiday weekend saw 254 complain of dengue fever symptoms

TWO hundred and fifty-four persons flooded public health facilities with symptoms of dengue fever over the Emancipation holiday weekend, the Ministry of Health said.

While health officials tackle the dengue fever outbreak in the capital, Minister of Health Hubert Minnis revealed yesterday that, aside from the two "imported" cases, Grand Bahama has no dengue problem.

"You only had two cases there. Both were imported from Nassau," he told The Freeport News Sunday.

The scope of the dengue fever outbreak remains unclear as the Ministry of Health has not released any new numbers on reported cases over the last week.

In recent days there have been claims that the scale of the outbreak has been downplayed.

Observers claim that health officials have not reported the true number of people with the vector-born virus.

Minister of Health Dr. Hubert Minnis said that the last count was about 1,500 cases. That was more than a week ago.

When The Nassau Guardian contacted Minnis yesterday, he said he was out of the country and had yet to receive a recent report. But he said the Ministry of Health is not downplaying the outbreak...

Some residents convinced that Dengue Fever has hit GB

Despite the health minister's claim on Sunday that there were no dengue fever cases originating in Grand Bahama, local residents are claiming they know of persons who have been infected with the virus.

According to Minister Hubert Minnis, the two reported cases in Grand Bahama were "imported" from New Providence and those individuals have been treated and since returned to the capital.

He also revealed that that was the case as of Friday, August 12.

But, some residents in Grand Bahama say nothing could be further from the truth...

Based on the forecasted track yesterday, it seems certain that Hurricane Irene will hit some parts of The Bahamas. If the eye of the system passes over New Providence, the heavy rainfall associated with the storm could add to the dengue fever problem we already have on our main island.

The Ministry of Health last week confirmed that there have been more than 3,000 cases of dengue fever in The Bahamas since the recent outbreak began. There has also been a confirmed death from the virus. The middle-aged woman?s death was one of four deaths the Ministry of Health was investigating last week. However, it is assumed that there have been more cases and deaths than have been reported...

THE public is advised to keep vigilant against mosquito breeding grounds as health officials confirmed cases of dengue haemorrhagic fever yesterday.

Addressing fears that there was now a new and deadlier strain of dengue fever on the island, Delon Brennen, deputy chief medical officer for the Ministry of Health, explained that each strain has the potential to develop into dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF).

Dr Brennon explained that there was still only one strain - out of four possible strains - on the island, dengue type 1, and that there was no way to prevent the illness from developing into DHF...

Health Minister maintains no case of Dengue in GB

Health officials maintain that test results of blood samples originating from Grand Bahama reveal that there are only two recorded cases of dengue fever.

In the meantime, Minister of Health Dr. Hubert Minnis says residents should not let their guard down and still maintain a clean environment.

"There were six samples sent off and only two were positive and both those cases generated from New Providence," he told The Freeport News late Monday afternoon.

"Up to today, speaking to the staff, they say they have no cases that were generated from Grand Bahama."

Two weeks ago, health officials were faced with the daunting task of tackling the dengue fever outbreak in New Providence, but Minister Minnis revealed then that, aside from the two "imported" cases, Grand Bahama had no dengue problem...

Child dengue fever cases 'on the rise'

CLINICAL cases of dengue fever in children were said to be on the rise, according to a local doctor.

The physician also told The Tribune that the symptoms experienced by persons going to the clinics have increased and intensified across the board.

Health Minister Dr Hubert Minnis said that he could not confirm or deny reports as data from public and private facilities had not been fully compiled. However, he noted that dehydration played a key role in the severity of the disease.

The doctor, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said: "It has not let up at all. We are swamped every day, and the symptoms that we are seeing now are a lot worse than what we were seeing at the start of the outbreak."

Health officials continue to stress the need for greater community involvement against the outbreak...

Dengue outbreak hits Bahamas, CDC says

Federal health officials alerted travelers this week about an outbreak of dengue in the Bahamas after a higher-than-usual number of travelers returning from there, including two Northern Virginia children, fell ill with the debilitating disease.

A 14-year-old Lorton boy came down with a high fever last month and such severe muscle aches that he could barely walk, his mother said Friday. Another boy, Collin Allen, 10, of Springfield, had severe headaches, fever, nausea and a rash, became dehydrated and was hospitalized for three days in late August, his mother, Terri Allen, said. Both recovered.

Late Thursday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention posted on its Web site a notice about the outbreak in the Bahamas, a popular destination for Americans. About 1,000 cases of dengue-like symptoms have been reported in the Bahamas since Aug. 9, according to the notice. New Providence, the most populous island, which includes the city of Nassau, has had ?heightened dengue activity,? the notice said.

Before this year, CDC officials said, they were not aware of widespread dengue in the Bahamas...
