RIO DE JANEIRO, 7 (Reuters) - The Secretariat of Health of Bahia, in northeastern Brazil, reported today that the meningitis death toll rose to 39 so far this year.
Of that total, 27 deaths were caused by type C meningitis, the most severe form of the disease.
According to the source, were confirmed 330 cases of meningitis throughout the State, with 39 deaths from all types of evil.
Also according to the Secretariat, there was increased mortality of the disease in the previous year, from 25.4% to 31.1%.
Throughout 2009, were registered in Bahia 1511 cases of meningitis and 152 deaths.
