SANTA CRUZ, Calif. —A health alert was issued by the Santa Cruz County Health Services Agency Friday afternoon after two people in San Lorenzo Valley contracted the measles.

FELTON -- Two cases of highly contagious measles have been confirmed in San Lorenzo Valley by lab tests, and the county health services agency warns anyone who shopped at New Leaf Market or Liberty Bank in Felton on Jan. 26, 27 or 28 may be at risk for the disease.

Health services agency spokeswoman Laurie Lang said the first confirmed case was isolated Jan. 19. The second was isolated at home Jan. 30, but remains infectious through Feb. 3...

Two incidents of measles appeared in Felton in late January, leading to warnings from county health officials.

The disease was first identified in Felton on Jan. 19, after the daughter of a New Leaf Market employee in Felton returned from a trip to India and started feeling ill...

...The daughter of the New Leaf employee was likely infectious from Jan. 12 to 19, according to Laurie Lang, who works as a health educator for the County of Santa Cruz Public Health Agency.

Once the mother?s diagnosis was confirmed, the mother did not return to work. She was likely infectious from Jan. 26 to Sunday, Feb. 3.

The mother also may have visited Liberty Bank in Felton on Jan. 26, 28 or 29, so people who visited either New Leaf Market or Liberty Bank in Felton on those dates may be at risk of contracting measles.

According to Lang, symptoms could appear as late as Feb. 24, because the illness typically incubates in the body seven to 18 days after exposure...

Ventura County measles case highlights the importance of
immunizations
(VENTURA COUNTY, Calif.)
- The Ventura County Public Health (VCPH) Department has received reports of one confirmed case and one suspected case of measles in the East County. The affected individuals are visiting the county from Europe.

Symptoms of measles include fever, runny nose, cough, red eyes and a rash all over the body. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), for every 1,000 children who get measles, one
or two will die and many more will require hospitalization.

Dr. Paul Russell, acting Ventura County Public Health Officer, says that the confirmed case highlights the importance of all people receiving required immunizations. ?Measles is a completely preventable disease and although
it has been virtually eliminated in the United States, it still kills 200,000 people worldwide each year,? said Russell. ?Measles is so contagious that any child who is exposed to it and is not immune will probably get
the disease.?

VCPH advises anyone experiencing symptoms of measles to contact their doctor before going to their doctor?s office or clinic. Because measles is highly contagious, people with symptoms should be separated from other patients and not sit in crowded waiting rooms.

Healthcare providers should remind patients who are traveling outside North America about the risk of measles and offer vaccine if appropriate. Healthcare providers should also consider that patients may have contracted measles if they have fever, rash, and have a history of recent travel outside North America.

The CDC recommends that children get 2 doses of MMR (Measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine): the first dose at 12 ? 15 month of age and the second dose at 4-6 years of age.

Ventura County health officials report no new measles cases

Three days after a confirmed case of measles triggered concerns about the spread of the disease, Ventura County Public Health officials are cautiously optimistic.

No new measles cases have been found in the county, meaning only the original case has been confirmed, said Dr. Robert Levin, Ventura County?s public health officer. The disease also did not cause three illnesses identified Friday as possible cases...
