CAMBODIA: Dengue officials brace for "nightmare season"

PHNOM PENH, 17 May 2011 (IRIN) - As Cambodia enters its dengue season, with outbreaks in four out of 24 provinces, the National Dengue Control Programme (NDCP) is warning that a repeat of the 2007 epidemic - when about 40,000 people were hospitalized, more than 10,000 in one week - may be imminent.

"Based on my experience, I see the same pattern as 2007 emerging now," said To Setha, a vector control specialist at the NDCP, pointing to the higher number of cases than usual during the final months of last year and the first two months of this year.

Rekul Huy, chief of epidemiology at the NDCP, is also alarmed by the high number of cases during months when dengue is usually rare.

A change in the serotype of the virus (which has four) from DEN2 to DEN1 detected in the middle of last year also concerns him, as does the increase in the percentage of patients with dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) in the first four months of this year: from about 50 percent last year to two-thirds this year.

An increase in DHF patients signals the possible presence of a new serotype, he said.

In Cambodia, where dengue is endemic, the number of cases spikes in June and July - a period NDCP director Ngan Chantha refers to as the "nightmare season" - with major outbreaks occurring in three- to five-year intervals.

Chantha said the number of cases at the beginning of this year had reached the "alert" level, signalling a possible nationwide outbreak during the rainy season.

This year, however, his department faces severe financial constraints to implement the swift interventions necessary to contain local outbreaks before they spiral out of control as in 2007.

Officials from the National Dengue Control Programme have called on provincial health officials to be on alert for outbreaks of dengue fever following a recent spike in the number of recorded cases.

In an email sent earlier this week, NDCP director Ngan Chantha instructed provincial officials to be prepared to treat the mosquito-borne illness as the Kingdom heads into the rainy season, during which dengue cases are most common.

Ngan Chantha said yesterday that there had been an increase in the number of deaths from dengue fever this year because parents had not sent infected children to hospitals quickly enough.

?According to our data, the current dengue fever situation is alarming,? he said.

There have been 845 reported cases of dengue fever nationwide so far this year, resulting in eight deaths, compared with 731 cases resulting in four deaths over the same period last year, Ngan Chantha said.

PHNOM PENH, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia reported that as many as 1,793 severe cases of hemorrhagic dengue fever were hospitalized and 11 of them have died since early this year.

In a report filed by Kantha Bopha Children's Hospitals, up to June 20, there were 1,793 severe cases of dengue fever, and 547 of them were hospitalized in Siem Reap Province, 1,247 in Phnom Penh. Of the total hospitalized, 11 have died.

Dr. Beat Richner, the founder and head of the Kantha Bopha Children's Hospitals, who has been operating them since 1992 said the sick children are coming from across the country.

WITH more than 4,600 patients hospitalised from dengue so far this year and outbreaks in seven provinces, the National Dengue Control Programme is calling for heightened vigilance during the remainder of the rainy season, when the mosquito-borne disease is most prevalent.

Parents should immediately take children suffering from a high fever to the nearest health centre or hospital for treatment, NDCP director Dr Ngan Chantha said yesterday, explaining that early and appropriate treatment was critical for preventing dengue haemorrhagic fever, which can be fatal.

According to the NDCP, 4,626 patients, primarily children, were hospitalised in the first 27 weeks of this year, compared to 2,888 in the same period last year. Twenty-three had died, compared to nine in the same period last year. The most serious outbreaks are in Kampong Thom, Kampong Cham, Siem Reap, Kandal and Kampong Speu and Banteay Meanchey provinces, Ngan Chantha said.

A total of 40 Cambodian children died of dengue fever in the 1st 7
months of this year [2011], an increase from 37 such deaths in all of
last year [2010], Minister of Health Mam Bunheng said Monday [22 Aug 2011].

From January to July this year [2011], some 7867 cases of dengue fever
had been reported, exceeding the 2010 total of 5497 cases, the minister
told reporters during a visit to dengue fever patients at the National
Pediatric Hospital in Phnom Penh.

"The disease has claimed more Cambodian children's lives this year
[2011] than last year [2010], so I'd like to appeal to parents to let
their children sleep under mosquito nets and if their kids have symptoms
that are suspicious of the disease, they should urgently send them for
medical attention," he said.

Dengue is an infectious tropical disease caused by the dengue virus.
Symptoms include headache, fever, exhaustion, severe muscle and joint
pain, swollen glands, and rash.

In Cambodia, outbreaks of dengue fever usually take place in the rainy
season from May to October.

[According to the newswire above, an increasing trend of dengue
infection is reported in Cambodia. There is a higher cumulative number
of reported cases and deaths due to dengue infection in 2011 relative to
the same time period in 2010.

According to Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO) of the World Health
Organization's report on dengue situation dated 17 Aug 2011, a total of
7867 cases and 40 deaths due to dengue infection, with a case fatality
rate (CFR) of 0.51 percent were reported up to the end of week 30 [30
Jul 2011] in 2011. In 2010, a total of 5907 cases and 14 deaths, with
CFR of 0.24 percent were reported for the same period (available at

In 2009, 242 424 cases and 785 deaths due to dengue infection were

The number of people hospitalised with dengue fever has increased by more than 25 per cent this year compared with last year, and there have been almost three times as many deaths, according to National Dengue Control Program statistics.

Forty-four of the 9,451 people hospitalised with dengue between the beginning of the year and August 16 died from the mosquito-borne illness, NDCP director Ngan Chantha said yesterday.

During the corresponding period last year, 7,477 people were hospitalised with dengue and 19 of them died, he said.

54 Cambodian children die of dengue fever in 9 months

PHNOM PENH, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia reported on Monday that some 54 Cambodian children had been killed by dengue fever in the first nine months of this year, compared to 37 kids dying of the disease in the whole year of 2010.

From January to September this year, some 12,392 cases of dengue fever had been reported with 54 children killed by the disease. The whole year 2010 reported only 5,497 cases, Ngan Chantha, director of dengue control at the Ministry of Health, said on Monday...

PHNOM PENH, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia's Ministry of Health reported on Tuesday that at least 72 Cambodian children had been killed by dengue fever in 2011, an increase of 89 percent, compared with the 2010's deaths of 38 kids.

It said that there were 15,805 dengue fever cases reported in 2011, up 26 percent from 12,500 cases in a year earlier...

The number of people hospitalised with dengue during 2011 rose 25 per cent from the year before and the number of deaths almost doubled, health officials said yesterday.

Ngan Chantha, head of the National Dengue Control Programme, said 15,805 people were hospitalised with dengue between January and the middle of last month and 72 of those died. In 2010, about 12,500 people had been hospitalised with dengue, 38 of whom died.
