ST. JOHN?S, N.L. ? Health officials say they?re dealing with an outbreak of sexually transmitted syphilis in eastern Newfoundland.

The province?s chief medical officer of health says most of the cases have been contracted through sex, rather than intravenous drug use...

...There have been 42 confirmed cases in a little over a year in the Eastern Health region, seven of which have been diagnosed in 2018 with the highest incidence among people in their 20s and 40s.

Sarbu says they have already seen people with irreversible hearing and vision loss through infectious neurosyphilis...
