Chile confirms swine flu in turkeys

SANTIAGO ? Swine flu has jumped to birds, possibly opening a whole new chapter in the global epidemic.

Chile's health ministry says it confirmed that the virus jumped from people to turkeys at two farms outside the city of Valparaiso. Authorities ordered a complete quarantine Friday and alerted the World Health Organization.

Some illness was suspected at the farms owned by the Sopraval company after egg production dropped this month. Samples were taken and confirmed Thursday to be the same influenza virus now circulating in humans around the world - a mixture of human, pig and bird genes.

Deputy health minister Jeannette Vega tells Chile's radio Cooperativa on Friday that the farms have been quarantined, and that turkeys remain safe to eat.

Swine flu has been detected in turkeys at two farms in Chile, the first time the H1N1 virus has been found outside humans and pigs.

The country's farming leaders said the outbreak had been controlled on the farms, 75 miles from the capital Santiago and that both farms had been placed under quarantine.

The virus was detected last week (13 August) after turkey producers reported anomalies in the output of eggs.

Chilean authorities urged people not to be put off from eating turkey meat.

"We call on the public to consume turkey products with confidence," a statement from the country's farming and livestock agency said.

Laboratory results ruled out the presence of H5N1 or bird flu virus, it added.

It is not known how the animals were infected.

It is the first time the disease has been found in animals other than pigs.

Tests have found the virus appeared to have originated in pigs before spreading between humans, leading the World Health Organisation to declare a global pandemic earlier this year.
