MERS case in Saudi Arabia; More chikungunya in Americas

[h=3]Saudi Arabia reports 1 new MERS case, 1 recovery[/h] An additional case of MERS-CoV today as well as a recovery over the weekend have been reported from Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Health (MOH). They bring the cumulative totals in that country since June 2012 to 983 cases, including 428 deaths, 552 recoveries, and 3 active cases.
The new case-patient is a 41-year-old male expatriate living in Huraymila who is in critical condition, the MOH reported today. He is not a health worker and had no known exposure to MERS-CoV (Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus) in either the community or the hospital setting, although the report says more information on his exposure history will be forthcoming.
His case is only the second in the past 2 weeks, with the other reported May 1.
The patient who recovered is a 49-year-old expatriate from Riyadh whose case was previously reported, the MOH said on May 2. He is not a health worker but had preexisting disease.

[h=3]Chikungunya cases rise by 12,000 in South America[/h] The chikungunya outbreak in the Caribbean and the Americas that began in 2013 has grown by 12,891 cases, to 1,414,451 cases, according to a May 1 update from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
Colombia reported the most new cases last week, and Ecuador follows at a distant second, PAHO said, but they are among only a handful of countries reporting in. The previous week saw an increase of almost 30,000 cases.
The additional cases since the Apr 24 report in Colombia number 10,020 suspected (285,306 total) and 5 confirmed (1,607 total). Those in Ecuador rose by 1,951 suspected (3,516 total) and 170 confirmed (390 total).
The only other countries reporting this week were Mexico, with 228 additional confirmed cases (906 total); Paraguay, with 51 new suspected cases (441 total) and 36 new confirmed cases (428 total); and the Bahamas, with 3 new confirmed cases (102 total).
Of the cumulative total cases, 1,379,788 are suspected, 31,024 confirmed, and 3,639 imported, PAHO noted. The large majority of the imported cases (2,574) have occurred in the United States.
