With the number of swine flu deaths in Karnataka touching 80, a worried state government has initiated a clinical audit, a health official said here Tuesday.
'The purpose behind the clinical audit is to find the actual causes behind the death of 80 people due to H1N1 influenza in the state,' Usha Vasunkar, director of Health and Family Services, told IANS.
'We've taken a decision to have a clinical audit on Monday. During our earlier survey, we found that 40 percent of the swine flu victims had co-morbid factors (pre-existing illness) and many died due to late admission. However, the audit will give a clear picture of actual cause for deaths,' she added.
A profile of each victim, which includes their name, age, sex, symptoms and cause of death, will be studied by a panel of experts during the clinical audit.
Three new swine flu deaths were reported in Karnataka late Monday night, taking the death toll to 80.
Two women succumbed to swine flu at a government hospital in Bangalore, and a one-year-old girl died at a private hospital in Gulbarga.
The women, aged 22 and 35, died Sep 14 and Sep 16, and the baby died Sep 17.
However, reports confirming that all three victims tested positive for the virus was received only on Sep 21, a health official said.
Of the 80 death reports in Karnataka, 59 were registered in Bangalore and the rest were from other parts of the state.
Health experts are also stressing on the need to maintain personal hygiene to avoid the spread of the H1N1 virus.
On Monday, 12 fresh cases tested positive for the virus in the state. Of these, 11 were reported in Bangalore and one in Bijapur. With these new figures, the total number of positive cases in the state reached 899.
