By: EDITORIAL HEALTH | 6:16 pm | September 30, 2011

This was confirmed by the National Institute of Food and Drug Monitoring (Invima).

The agency warned on Friday about the discovery of the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes in Sausage Zarpollo Premium Chicken & Ham Chicken Zarpollo developed by the company Zarc?rnicos SA
According to the INVIMA, the affected lots were, in the case of chicken sausages, the 4361111, and the ham chicken, 3371117.
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium resistant to environmental conditions such as high salt or acidity and low oxygen concentration. It survives for long periods of time in the environment, food, processing plants and even in the refrigerator.
Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria can cause listeriosis, an infection that usually affects immunocompromised individuals, fetuses or newborns, the elderly and people who are being treated with immunosuppressive drugs. It can also cause meningitis, encephalitis, spontaneous abortion, premature birth and neonatal disease and mild febrile gastroenteritis in healthy people, among other diseases.
The Institute advised the community to inform health authorities the presence of these food products in supermarkets, sales or deli meat products, and consume no reason.
So far, according to the bank, has not received any reports of consumers affected by the bacteria.
