BOGOTA (AP) ? President Alvaro Uribe has the swine flu and officials are contacting other South American governments whose leaders attended a recent summit along with the Colombia leader, authorities said Sunday.

The 57-year-old Uribe began feeling symptoms Friday, the same day as a meeting of South American presidents in Bariloche, Argentina, and he was confirmed to have swine flu on Saturday, said Social Protection Minister Diego Palacio.

"This isn't something that has us scared," Palacio told a news conference, adding that Uribe was not considered a high-risk patient.

Uribe is not under quarantine and none of his family members or close associates have shown symptoms of the disease, officials said.

Uribe spent Friday defending a plan to give U.S. troops access to Colombian bases as part of the war on drugs during an UNASUR group summit attended by most of the region's presidents.

Palacio said that Colombia's foreign ministry was informing governments whose officials may have come in contact with Uribe.

Colombia's Presidency released a brief statement saying the country's National Health Institute confirmed that Uribe had swine flu. It said his case was "developing satisfactorily."

Officials did not provide further details of Uribe's symptoms. But local media said that during the Colombian president's customary meeting with regional authorities on Saturday he appeared congested and sneezing.

Uribe is the second Latin American leader to come down with the swine flu.

On Aug. 11, Costa Rican President Oscar Arias announced that he had swine flu and was being quarantined at his home. The 69-year-old Nobel Peace Prize recovered.

Colombia has reported 621 confirmed cases, including Uribe, of swine flu with 31 deaths, according to the social protection ministry.

MOSCOW, August 31 (RIA Novosti)


Colombian President Alvaro Uribe has contracted swine flu, regional media reports said on Monday.

Uribe began complaining of a fever, headaches and back pain after returning from a summit of South American leaders in Argentina, Colombian officials said on Sunday.

Uribe will continue to work from home for about a week while he recovers, presidential spokesman Cesar Mauricio Velasquez was quoted as saying.

Summit participants have been informed, the spokesman said.

The Union of South American Nations (Unasur) summit met in Argentina on Friday to discuss a deal giving U.S. troops access to Colombian bases.

Uribe is the second Latin American leader to come down with swine flu after Costa Rica's Oscar Arias announced on August 11 that he had the virus and was being quarantined at home.

Colombia has reported 621 confirmed cases of swine flu, including Uribe's. There have been 34 deaths from the illness in the country.

The virus has spread worldwide since its initial outbreak in Mexico in April. The World Health Organization declared a pandemic in June.

Aug. 31 (Bloomberg) -- Colombian Defense Minister Gabriel Silva is receiving medical treatment after showing symptoms of swine flu, according to a statement from the president's office.

Silva, who began feeling ill with fever this morning, has been isolated and is undergoing tests, the statement said.

President Alvaro Uribe is undergoing treatment after tests showed yesterday that he is suffering from the swine flu H1N1 virus. He is showing ?positive? improvements and working via computer, the statement said.

Colombia has given a health advisory to officials from a group of 12 South American countries who came into contact with Uribe during the Aug. 28 UNASUR summit in Argentina, according to the statement.

Trade Minister Guillermo Plata and General Freddy Padilla, head of Colombia's armed forces, are also sick, RCN Radio reported separately.
