Concern over Ontario patient from Nigeria with flu symptoms

TORONTO (NEWS1130) - A public health official says a patient at a hospital near Toronto has been isolated as a precautionary measure after showing flu-like symptoms similar to those characteristic of the Ebola virus.

Dr. Eileen de Villa with Peel Public Health says the steps are being taken because the patient at Brampton Civic Hospital recently travelled to Nigeria, which has been hit with an outbreak of the disease.

Experts expect the patient currently in isolation at a Brampton, Ont. hospital will have to wait until Sunday night, at the earliest, to learn whether he has been infected by the Ebola virus.

Blood samples from a man now being treated at Brampton Civic Hospital west of Toronto were sent Friday to Winnipeg's National Microbiology Laboratory. The lab was expected to take at least 48 hours to determine the cause of his flu-like symptoms, infectious disease specialist Dr. Neil Rau told CTV News.

"The test has to be done using the level four lab -- the kind of lab you saw in the movie ?Outbreak,' the one where people are wearing the spacesuits," Rau said.

Before testing for the virus can begin, the blood samples need to be "deactivated," so that the officials conducting the tests won't become infected. Once the blood has been deactivated, Rau said, the lab will test for genetic evidence of Ebola.

Ontario health officials say it is likely the tests will show that the man is Ebola-free...

Hospital continues to take precautionary measures as it awaits final test results Sunday, but circulates memo assuring staff it?s ?business as usual?

...Ontario health officials are awaiting blood test results from a Winnipeg lab to determine with certainty whether or not the Brampton patient has contracted the virus that has killed nearly 1,000 in West Africa since the current outbreak began.

Those results should be known by 6 p.m. Sunday, Pollett said. ?This will all be put to rest very soon.?

The National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg is the only Canadian lab capable of carrying out Ebola tests...

Brampton patient tests negative for Ebola

BRAMPTON, Ont. - A patient who was placed in the Isolation unit of a Toronto-area hospital has tested negative for the often deadly Ebola virus.

Ontario Health Minister Eric Hoskins broke the news in a statement he issued this morning.

"I can now confirm a recent case that underwent testing at the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg was found to test negative for Ebola virus disease," he said in a release.

The person was admitted to Brampton Civic Hospital with flu-like symptoms after returning from Nigeria, one of the West African nations currently battling an Ebola outbreak that has killed nearly 1,000 people...
