According to the Ministry of Social protection due to the effects of the winter wave, during the year 2011 has presented a trend of approximately 70,000 weekly cases of acute respiratory infection.
The Ministry of Social protection explained that the acute respiratory infection, is one of communicable events of major importance in public health, it can quickly cause an effect and impact on morbidity and mortality in a population. The case of Colombia is not exempt from this.
According to Jos? Fernando Valderrama, doctor of the National Centre for liaison of the Ministry of Social protection, Colombia current weather forecasts, facilitates the circulation of virus and respiratory infection, that is why, in the last three months of the year, is expected to an epidemiological peak and increase of acute respiratory infections.
?So far there is movement of respiratory syncytial virus (which causes 80 percent of respiratory diseases in children under 5 years) and in other cases less recurring virus as influenza A and B, pneumococci and the influence of virus H1N1 that has not left its circulation in the country. "In the course of the year are counted 560 cases and 49 fatal cases" said Valderrama.
