A TEN-YEAR-OLD boy died from complications of the swine flu virus, a coroner has confirmed.

Angus Hardie, of Bramerton Road, Hockley, died suddenly last October. Tests were carried out following his unexpected death, but his stunned family and friends had no idea what caused it.

St Pancras Coroner?s Court revealed Angus had contracted the swine flu virus, which had caused pneumonia, multiple organ failure and led to his death.

Angus attended Plumberow Primary School in Hockley, along with his twin brother Ewan.

Headteacher Ian Barton has helped the school community to deal with the loss of the ?immensely popular, model pupil?.

He said: ?We have been given confirmation from the Coroner?s Office that Angus Hardie unfortunately died from the swine flu virus.

?With 609 pupils at school, it is clear this was an isolated incident of such unfortunate circumstances. The school community will continue to support the Hardie family during this difficult period.?

Following Angus?s death, there was a huge outpouring of grief in the community. Tributes poured in for the youngster via the social networking site Facebook and through flowers and tokens.

Lisa Davidson, spokeswoman for NHS East of England, said: ?We cannot give further details on individual cases as it may prejudice patient confidentiality. We also cannot provide a running commentary on suspected cases. At any time there will be several cases under investigation across the region. Some of these may later be confirmed as swine flu related deaths, while others will not prove to have a link.

?It is unhelpful to speculate about cases as this may cause distress to the family.?

An inquest into the schoolboy?s death is due to be heard at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, today.

A 10-year-old boy died from organ failure after developing severe pneumonia as a result of swine flu, an inquest has heard.

Angus Hardie, from Hockley, Essex, was a "healthy, fit and well child" - one of twins - before being taken seriously ill last year, the hearing was told.

He was admitted to Southend Hospital on October 3 suffering from a headache, fever and diarrhoea and vomiting. His condition was so serious he was transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital in London for specialist treatment, but he failed to improve and died on October 6.

Consultant paediatric pathologist Irene Scheimberg, who carried out a post-mortem examination, gave the cause of Angus's death as multiple organ failure, bronchopneumonia and influenza H1N1.

Inner North London Coroner Andrew Reid recorded a verdict of natural causes.

He said: "The underlying cause of these conditions was influenza strain H1N1, swine flu."

Angus's parents, Donna and Robert Hardie, did not attend the five-minute inquest at the Royal London Hospital in east London.
