Dengue tally inches towards 2006 high

NEW DELHI: For the past four days, nearly 90 plus cases of dengue are being reported every day. On Friday, 97 new cases were reported taking the tally to 2,728. Experts say Delhi would cross the figures of 2006 outbreak 3366 before the Commonwealth Games.

"The number of cases has drastically increased. Till last month, we were getting 50-60 cases every day. But now with the city reporting nearly 100 cases daily, we will soon cross 2006 figures,'' said a senior doctor with the MCD...

New Delhi, Sept 25 (PTI) Dengue retained its grip over the national capital with 93 fresh cases being reported today, taking the total number of patients suffering from the vector-borne disease to 2,821.

The capital has reported five dengue deaths this season.

The MCD has said students and working population are most prone to the disease and appealed to the heads of schools, offices and commercial establishments to take adequate precautions.

The civic bodies are attributing the rapid increase in dengue cases this season to prolonged monsoon and stagnation of water at Commonwealth Games construction sites.

The dengue outbreak has also raised concern among several countries which are participating in the Games to be held here from October 3.

With just five days left for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, the city continued to grapple with a dengue outbreak as cases of the vector-borne disease reached 3,013 after 97 more patients tested positive.

The capital has reported five dengue deaths this season.

South Delhi continued to be worst-affected this season recording 437 cases, followed by MCD Civil Lines Zone (392), Rohini (354) and Central Zone (337).

The civic bodies are attributing the rapid increase in dengue cases this season to prolonged monsoon and stagnation of water at Commonwealth Games construction sites...

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi is the latest to fall to dengue, with nearly 150 students down with the disease since monsoon set in. The 11 hostels of IIT-Delhi houses 6,000 students. The campus has a total population of 16,000, including the faculty and other staff members. The institute authorities claim there have not been more than 50 dengue positive cases so far.
?There?s no denying that we have had dengue cases, but 50 cases in a population of 16,000 is not alarming,? said Dr Surendra Prasad, Director, IIT Delhi.

The students and faculty members, however, differ. "I share a room with two other students, and all of us are down with dengue. In my hostel alone you'll find about 25-30 dengue cases, and the entire campus will easily have more than 100 students suffering from dengue," said a student of first year mechanical engineering, staying in Kumaon hostel, who is recuperating at a relatives place in south Delhi. The students and faculty members refused to be identified, as they feared action from the authorities.

A senior faculty member in the department of computer science also claimed a lot of cases went unreported. "Not all come to IIT hospital as it's a small set-up and not equipped to handle huge numbers. I personally know 10 people in my neighbourhood who went to a private lab and tested positive. Three of my own family members are down with dengue," said the professor, who himself has been on leave from work for more than two weeks due to dengue.

"The hostel windows provide easy access to mosquitoes as they don't have wire meshes. I haven't seen any fumigation worker or even someone spraying larvicide in the water collected around," said a third year student of mechanical engineering staying in Zanskar hostel, who knew of eight hostel students suffering from dengue.

Apart from the construction work being carried out on the campus, the institute authorities also blame neighbouring villages for mosquito breeding. "Though we are doing our best, the rains and our neighbouring village have hampered preventive measures," said Rakesh Kumar, Registrar, IIT-Delhi.

As a result students are losing precious study hours. "I missed my minor exams and now will have to take it at the end of the semester, which means double the syllabus. This is enough loss to affect our grades," said a first year student of bio-chemistry, who had to be hospitalised in AIIMS.

85 more test positive; dengue cases reach 3,468 in Delhi

New Delhi, Oct 2 (PTI) As the Commonwealth Games commences here tomorrow, the national capital continued to grapple with dengue outbreak with cases of the vector-borne disease today reaching 3,468 after 85 more patients tested positive.

With two more dengue deaths reported yesterday, the toll in the city has reached seven this season.

South Delhi continued to be the worst-affected with 483 cases, followed by Civil Lines (442), Rohini (399) and Central Zone (389).

The civic bodies are attributing the rapid increase in dengue cases this season to prolonged monsoon and stagnation of water at Commonwealth Games construction sites.

The dengue outbreak has also raised concern among several countries which are sending teams to participate in the Games to be held here from tomorrow.

86 new cases push dengue count up

The dengue menace continues unabated in the city with 86 fresh cases being reported on Monday. The total number of cases have now reached 3,641 in the city and seven persons have died so far.

The MCD, meanwhile, said that the domestic breeding checkers (DBCs) have found mosquito breeding at more than 94,000 premises and have sent legal notices to 76,255 people. Prosecution has been initiated in at least 14,729 cases. South Delhi continued to be the worst-affected with 487 cases, followed by Civil Lines (468), Rohini (419) and Central Zone (392).

Dengue cases climb to 4,165 in Delhi

New Delhi, Oct 11 (PTI) The incidence of dengue maintained its surge in the national capital with the number of patients affected by the vector-borne disease rising to 4,165 today.

The city has reported seven dengue deaths this season.

A total of 74 fresh cases were recorded today.

Civil Lines and South Delhi reported the highest number of 517 cases each this season followed by Rohini (504), Shahdara North (439) and Central Zone (419).

Delhi has also reported 21 cases of chikungunya this season.

59 dengue cases reported in Delhi today

New Delhi, Oct 18 (PTI) Fifty-nine cases of dengue were reported in the national capital today taking the total number of cases to over 4,600.

A total of 33 chikungunya cases have also been reported in the capital this year so far.

According to the statistics provided by MCD, Narela Zone topped the list of fresh dengue cases today with 12 followed by West, Shahdara (North) and Najafgarh with six cases each.

Out of the 59, two cases were from NDMC area.

The total number of dengue cases has touched 4,614, which included 4,588 cases reported from Delhi. Eight persons have died due to dengue this season.

New Delhi, Nov 27 (IANS) The number of new dengue cases has gone down in the capital, due to the advent of winters. There were only two cases of the vector-borne disease Saturday, a Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) report said.

This has pushed the total number of dengue cases here to 6,217 so far, out of which there were 39 cases from outside the city.

The government will next year set up a website where all registered hospitals in the city will report cases of dengue and chikungunya with demographic information and the kind of tests that were done. The move comes after private hospitals claimed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi was under-reporting the number of dengue cases and deaths.



The civic authority had clarified that it does not include numbers of positive cases done using the NS-1 tests as per the Central guidelines. Only cases that test positive via the IgM capture Elisa have been reported by the agencies. These tests are cheaper and are used by the government hospitals. As reported earlier, the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme is now thinking of approving the NS-1 Antigen as a confirmatory test for dengue. The cost had been a prohibitive factor in making NS-1 a confirmatory test for the government hospitals as the Elisa test kits cost just around Rs 400 each. The NS-1 kits help diagnose patients earlier, but are more expensive.

Dengue cases surfacing despite onset of winter

New Delhi, Dec 8 (PTI) Dengue cases continue to be reported despite the onset of winter, leaving medical experts and health officials worried as normally mosquito breeding dips significantly by mid November.
"We hardly get to hear of dengue cases in winters. It stops by mid November. But this time even in December hospitals are reporting dengue cases," V K Monga, Health Committee Chairman, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, said.

"Our domestic breeding checkers are finding mosquito breeding in overhead tanks and coolers even at this time of the season. It is a myth that mosquitoes die during winters," an entomologist with a government agency said...

8 fresh cases of dengue in Delhi

New Delhi, Dec 14 (PTI) Eight fresh cases of dengue have been reported in the city from December one despite the onset of winter, leaving medical experts and health officials worried as normally mosquito breeding subsides by mid-November.

According to Muncipal Corporation of Delhi''s Health Department, Safdurjung, Ram Manohar Lohia and some other hospitals reported new cases of dengue raising the number of such infected people to 6,229 this year out of which eight persons died.

Dr V K Monga, Health Committee Chairman of MCD said there were hardly any cases from mid-November last year during the winter spell. "But this time, even in December hospitals are reporting dengue cases," he said...

Delhi reported the highest number of dengue cases during the Commonwealth Games and 38 cases in December 2010 alone, which is unusual for winter, said the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

According to the MCD, a total of 6,259 dengue cases have been reported from different hospitals in Delhi last year, of which over 4,000 were reported in October and September.

A total of 2,246 dengue fever cases were reported from different hospitals in October and 2,360 in September, the MCD's daily status report of dengue cases said.

Unlike the usual trend, this year dengue cases were reported much before the commencement of monsoon season and continued to be reported even after the winter set in.

"Dengue fever cases are reported after the monsoon and disappear by November. In 2010, it was unusual. Dengue cases were reported in June, which is much before the monsoon and continued to be reported in winter too. 38 dengue cases in December is surprising because the temperatures are not conducive to mosquito breeding," an MCD official said...
