Pig lungs and larynx are fed to minks.
Also to American turkeys or other pigs ?

What's the food for Mexican pigs , North-American pigs ?
(presumably they won't tell us if lungs or larynx would be fed)


Maybe a mexican pig with triple-reassortant --> H1N1 got imported food-meal
from Europe or Asia which contained lungs or larynx from European pigs ...

H3N2 is mink is not new.

My understanding after reading the report in post #20, is that the agent involved is an H3N2 virus, where the H and N genes are from human H3N2 flu, but the other six genes are from the triple-reassortment H1N1 swine flu (which is NOT the pandemic virus).

That is a really bad occurrence, as that could have caused another pandemic. Fortunately, there is no evidence that this reassorted virus can or has infected humans yet.

So we think the other six genes came from conventional swine H1N1? Or are you saying they came from the triple-reassortment virus despite the fact that seems impossible?

i think they probably came from European swine, which went
from birds to swine in ~1978 with all 8 segments.

the HA and NA from human H3N2 also happened in European
swine, it went from humans to swine quite early <1984

so the mink could have got the whole H3N2 from a swine
and the reassortment would be 25 years ago.


But this is speculation, the sequences are not public (yet)

But it is consistent - we haven't been checking swine sequences that throughly before this year, so such a virus could have existed in swine for 25 years and not been detected. And the lack of spread from minks to humans now is consistent with the lack of spread from swine to humans over the past 25 years.

there were several swine with H3N2
and they had the HA and NA which went from humans
to swine ~25 years ago

I think, a flu in mink is unusual and would probably have been detected
before, pandemic or not.
Alarm and surveillance was even higher in 2006-7 than now.
Or in 2003 after the Dutch outbreak or 1999 in Italy.

I think it's entirely possible that influenza has spread from mink to their handlers, but ordinary flu would not have been reported or tested.
