This is why, when an international health organization such as the WHO announces an international health emergency -

people should listen.

The HHS declared a health emergency weeks ago -

people should listen.

It should not matter whether local authorities in New York are debating a "pre-existing" condition for a causative factor for this man's severe illness because local authorities should be listening to the HHS and WHO about how serious the situation is, and could develop into.

I agree with all.

But precisely because of the word "listening", things going wrong.

Because our human society never listen when it is enaugh early.

That's why the word listen must be changed in "mandatory when it is early".

Many don't like this word, but if it is neccessary - its better using it early, than later when things goes out of any control.

The countries measures (mainly) are weak, and permited/permits further viral dissemination by many ways. This is what must be mandatory narrowed to be accomplish, now - not later when every house block would have patients.

How will be like the tourist/airplain/... business when this goes full blown because it would be everywhere?
Do they loose enormous quantity of money compared to making now more stringent quarantines? Yes.

How sucessfully would be than to instaurate mandatory laws/quarantines/etc?

Or we will act all in an Holly. movie where the populace will be town ringed and left the illness doing its course until it fade naturaly ...

At the beginning of HIV pandemic some people fell ill with Hepatitis B virus infection in Italy. I am talking about an incident happened around in the early '80. IDUs were almost the only affected by this outbreak.

Several years after, when the HIV was finally isolated and a test kit commercialized, it was clear that these people caught BOTH the viruses and one ''opened'' the door and increased the severity of subsequent AIDS.

The mention of AIDS reminds me of a parallel to the current situation. Because of a longstanding perception that only gay men could get AIDS (even though the health community knew that was nonsense), the general population didn't take preventive measures, and as a result many more people were infected than might otherwise have been. The belief that H1N1 is dangerous only for people with "pre-existing conditions" could well have a similar result. "I'm in perfect health, so I don't need to worry about this little cough and fever and muscle ache."
