Eight new swine flu cases in Uttar Pradesh, total now 27

Lucknow, Aug 16 (IANS) Eight new cases of swine flu were confirmed in the Uttar Pradesh capital Sunday, taking the number reported in the state so far to 27.

According to Dr. T.N.Dhole, head of the microbiology department at the Sanjay Gandhi Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) here: "Swine flu appeared to be clearly on the rise in the state with as many as eight of the 85 samples testing positive."

He said Lucknow's posh Gomti Nagar turned out to be the worst affected so far, with at least four of the new cases coming from there.

What has sent the alarm bells ringing was the detection of secondary infection in a student of the local Babu Banarsi Das Institute of Engineering and Technology.

"In fact, that was the sole case with secondary infection, otherwise, the rest of the 26 cases were found to be carrying only primary swine flu infection, that is much easily curable," Dhole said.

Meanwhile, the institute's microbiology department, which is the only authorised testing laboratory for the virus, was flooded with as many as 150 fresh samples Sunday.

Dhole said they hoped to complete the testing of these samples latest by Monday morning.
