Tampa, Florida - The Hillsborough County Health Department is reporting a substantial increase in Shigella cases county-wide, with over 40 confirmed cases since the beginning of October.

TAMPA - Flu season may be at its peak, but the Hillsborough County Health Department is more concerned about another illness that can make people just as miserable...
...The real concern in Hillsborough is shigella, a nasty bacterial virus known for producing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and bloody diarrhea, epidemiologist Warren McDougle said.
Usually, about 30 cases of shigella are reported countywide each year. That number more than tripled, to 115 cases, in the past five months. Pinellas County also has seen an increase.
