The Florida Department of Health on Tuesday reissued its dengue fever prevention message after a confirmed case of the disease in Marion County.

County government, at the request of the Marion County Health Department, will conduct a mosquito spray at 8 p.m. Wednesday south of Ocala.

Beekeepers and residents who are sensitive to chemicals and pesticides are asked to take the necessary precautions.

This case of dengue fever — Marion County's first this year — was contracted outside of the U.S., the county Health Department said in a news release.

MARTIN COUNTY ? The county?s first locally contracted case of dengue fever in 30 years was confirmed Thursday and the health department warns residents to take precaution.

The initial case of the disease was discovered in the Rocky Point section of Port Salerno after a resident developed symptoms after returning from the Caribbean. Test results confirmed a second person in the same household, who had not traveled, had contracted the virus.

Health officials Wednesday disclosed this year’s second case of locally acquired dengue fever in Miami-Dade, saying the second case means the painful disease is endemic in the county.

“It means it’s in our area, not an imported disease,” said Dr. Vincent Conte, deputy director of epidemiology and disease control for the health department.

Does this mean H2H transmission and if so, is that normal for dengue?

It isn't H2H in the sense of flu. What must have happened is the traveler was bitten a second time by a local mosquito in Florida, that then bit the second individual.

TAMPA - The Hillsborough County Health Department is tracking an unusual and serious illness, spread by mosquitos.

The department confirms three cases of Dengue Fever. All three patients are from the Seminole Heights area.

Two are neighbors who traveled to the Caribbean, and were infected there, officials said. The third person lives with one of the two, but got the disease here, most likely through a mosquito bite, according to the health department.

First case of dengue fever reported in Palm Beach County

Dengue fever, a dangerous mosquito-borne illness that's widespread in the Caribbean but uncommon in the United States, is now here in Palm Beach County, public health officials said today, after receiving confirmation that a local person was sick with the illness.

The Palm Beach County resident became sick on Sept. 23, and as the illness grew worse, a physician sent him or her to a local hospital on Sept. 27, O'Connor. The hospital did two initial tests, and a final test conducted at the state health lab confirmed on Wednesday that it was dengue, O'Connor said.

Palm Beach County Mosquito Control was notified late Wednesday, and targeted spraying and larviciding has begun, he said.

"They won't be doing mass aerial spraying," O'Connor said. "They are doing less spraying. But they work very closely with us and respond very quickly."

Locally acquired dengue has also appeared in Martin and Miami-Dade counties this season, so the health department had alerted doctors and hospitals last month to watch for it. Because its symptoms are so general, dengue can be difficult to diagnose.

"We sent a notice out to all clinicians in September to consider this as a diagnosis after the case in Martin County surfaced," O'Connor said. "We will send another notice today."

A second case of locally acquired dengue fever was identified today, Palm Beach County health officials said.

With others likely, the Health Department is raising the status level for mosquito-borne illness from a public health advisory to an alert.

"We have been closely monitoring the county for the possibility of dengue. The second case is good evidence that it is becoming established here and all should be on the alert to prevent mosquitoes from biting," said Health Department Director Alina Alonso in a statement...

Locally acquired cases in four counties does not bode well for the future. Miami-Dade County is quite a distance from Martin County and on the opposite coast from Hillsborough County (Tampa area).
