Flu confirmed in 23 Alberta deaths this season, nearly triple the toll at this point last year

Influenza has been confirmed in 23 people who died in Alberta this flu season, a death toll nearly three times as severe compared to the same time last year.

Nine of those deaths came in the Edmonton health zone, six in the Calgary zone, three in the south, three in the north, and two in the central zone, according to data published Thursday by Alberta Health Services

82 flu deaths this season tie Alberta record

EDMONTON - The influenza bug has become a record-tying killer in Alberta, after 82 people who contacted the illness died in the province this season.

The death toll matches the tally from 1998-99, which had been the deadliest flu season since reliable statistics started being recorded, provincial officials said.
