Four-yr-old is first confirmed H1N1 case in Kanpur Dehat

KANPUR: The family members of a four-year-old boy suffering from swine flu (said to be the first confirmed case in Kanpur Dehat) have been ostracised by other villagers as they are allegedly not taking proper precautions. The incident has come to light in Kishanpur. They have been instructed not to come out of the house as locals fear they may infect others.
Son of Desh Pandey of Kishanpur village was tested positive by SGPGI, Lucknow, on February 5. According to Chief Medical Officer, Kanpur Dehat, Dr VK Pandey "this is the first confirmed case of swine flu in Kanpur Dehat though more than a dozen suspected cases have been reported and proved negative over the past few months."
"As soon as the child's parents disclosed the fact to some villagers that their son had tested H1N1 positive, there was panic in the village and they were boycotted by villagers," Suman of Kishanpur village told TOI.
The boy, who had developed high fever and cold, was initially treated at Lala Lajpat Rai (LLR) hospital. The family is now consulting local sorcery practitioners making situation even worse, the villagers claim. "We have stopped visiting them and don't even use water of the well and handpump situated near their house," a villager informed on condition of anonymity.
"None of the family members are using face-masks that help in the spread of communicable disease," another villager claimed.
However, officials of the district health department informed the patient was currently undergoing treatment in isolation at his house and was recovering well. "A two-member team of doctors had visited the patient whose condition is stated to be stable and is showing signs of improvement after being administered the Tamiflu medicine," informed a senior health official.
Patient's father Desh Pandey said his four-year-old son tested positive for the virus on February 5 by SGPGI, Lucknow. "There are 13 members in my family. We have been provided some doses of medicine by the government doctors. Elders were asked to take small size tablet while the doctors have asked us to give bigger tablet to the child suffering from H1N1. Neighbours are asking their little ones not to visit our house and mix with our other children," Pandey claimed. "Villagers even went on to suggest that we shift the patient to some other place," he added.
Meanwhile, villagers are suffering from fear psychosis. "It is a killer disease and we are scared. We have stopped going to his house and maintain a distance from the patient as well as his family members," admitted Sunny of the same village.
A senior district administrative official, however, pointed out: "The family members of the patient have been asked to remain confined to their house and take proper care of the child suffering from H1N1 besides administering him regular medicine. We have to take precautionary measures, otherwise the disease may spread."
