Avian flu: 5,000 poultry slaughtered in Vaucluse

This is what all poultry farmers fear. An outbreak of bird flu has been detected in a laying hen farm in Monteux (Vaucluse). To limit the risk of contamination, 5,000 poultry were slaughtered.
In its press release published in the middle of the afternoon on Thursday , the Vaucluse prefecture evokes a "highly pathogenic" outbreak of avian influenza detected in a laying hen farm in Monteux. To avoid the risk of spreading the virus to other farms, the 5,000 poultry present were slaughtered. The site is now being disinfected. As for the breeder, he will be compensated.
Protective measures imposed
In an attempt to avoid contamination, the prefecture of Vaucluse defines a so-called "protection" zone of three kilometers around the outbreak. The municipalities of Althen-des-Paluds, Bédarrides, Entraigues-sur-la-Sorgue, Monteux and Sorgues are concerned. The movement and transport of poultry is prohibited there, as is the gathering of birds or the hunting of waterfowl and feathers.
The municipalities of Aubignan, Avignon, Carpentras, Orange, Pernes-les-Fontaines, or even Le Pontet in particular are, on the other hand, part of the so-called "surveillance" zone. An area of ten kilometers around Monteux which imposes a number of protective measures.
If this is indeed the first outbreak of this importance detected in the department, on the other hand, a few weeks ago, wild animals had been found contaminated in Saint-Saturnin-lès-Avignon and Sorgues.
