An outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) type H5N1 was confirmed on December 16 in a farm of ducks ready to force-feed located in the town of Manciet, in the department of Gers. This is the first poultry outbreak detected in the South-West since the epizootic of last winter which had severely affected this region.
In accordance with health management rules, the Gers home has been depopulated and preventively disinfected today. A protection zone (3 km) and a surveillance zone (10 km) around the home are set up by the Prefect. In order to control the risk of spreading the virus, the movement of poultry is prohibited in these areas where strict sanitary measures must be observed.
Preventive depopulation of farms epidemiologically linked to contaminated farms will be implemented: it concerns 2 other farms in the Gers. A preventive depopulation of the 5 palmiped farms located within 3 kms around this outbreak will also be carried out. The aim is to limit the spread of the virus.
This is the 8th outbreak in breeding that France has recorded on its territory, including 7 outbreaks in the Nord department (H5N1), to which are added 11 cases in wildlife (H5N1) and three cases in backyard (H5N8) on the metropolitan territory.
Avian influenza viruses continue to circulate actively in Europe through migratory birds. Twenty-nine countries are now affected throughout the European continent, which has nearly 400 outbreaks in breeding and 700 cases in wildlife.
Julien Denormandie, Minister of Agriculture and Food, once again calls on all professional sectors, hunters and individuals with birds to maintain extreme vigilance, to strictly respect protective measures against influenza. avian and to report without delay any suspicion to the health authorities in the department.
In order to prevent a new avian influenza epizootic, a roadmap was drawn up last July with professionals in the poultry sector. This roadmap has notably enabled the establishment of management rules aimed at better anticipating crisis situations (renewed governance, pre-established management scenario).
As a reminder, the consumption of meat, foie gras and eggs - and more generally of any food product made from poultry - does not present any risk for humans.
