Environmental groups build coalition on Louisiana issues

Saltwater intrusion in the aquifer that serves Baton Rouge, the sinkhole at Bayou Corne, Louisiana coastal erosion and concerns about additional drilling of more underground natural gas storage caverns at Lake Peigneur are issues that got environmental leaders from south Louisiana together in Baton Rouge on Friday to talk about common goals.

Affectionately calling itself the ?Green Army,? this loose network of environmental groups being led by former Lt. Gen. Russel Honor? (U.S. Army Retired) will bring together the many groups working on local issues into collaboration on larger goals...

He shared his dream of wielding bottled water as a witty weapon with a crowd that gathered at the Clifton Chenier Center on Thursday.

?I?ll go to Baton Rouge and bring a bottle full of fracking water to each one of those Louisiana legislators who says fracking water is harmless and invite them to drink it,? Honor? said. ?If there?s nothing wrong with it, each one of them will drink the whole bottle.?..

Military dictatorship has never been so appealing.

Aug. 29 marked nine years since Hurricane Katrina drove a rolling wall of water from the Gulf of Mexico that crashed the levee system around New Orleans, causing a huge flood and epic disaster.

Urban rebirth was not the agenda when retired Lt. Gen. Russel Honor??s Green Army pulled into a Xavier University of Louisiana hall Aug. 30 to commemorate the ninth anniversary of Katrina. The 275 environmental activists focused on strategies to counter the state?s eroding coastline along the Gulf of Mexico, toxic pollution sites affecting schools and neighborhoods across the southern parishes, and a political culture subservient to the oil industry.

?Don?t expect someone on a big airplane to come save you!? thundered Honor?, the Louisiana-born Creole who led Army troops in September 2005 that brought order to the broken city.
