Meningitis: Death toll reaches 100

Health Minister, Alex Segbefia is expected to brief Parliament?s Health Committee on the steps being taken to curtail the rise in deaths from meningitis Wednesday.

The death toll in the meningitis outbreak has hit a 100 with over 500 recorded cases so far. The Brong Ahafo region is the worst hit with at least two districts crossing the epidemic thresholds...

Pneumococcal meningitis death toll rises to 27 by gina(): 08:27 On Jan 22, 2016
Media File Five more people have so far been confirmed dead in the Brong Ahafo region following an outbreak of Pneumococcal meningitis, taking the death toll to 27.

Over 60 people have also been hospitalized after they were infected with the deadly pneumococcal meningitis in the region.

Health experts in the area say the latest strain is more contagious and fatal than Cerebrospinal Meningitis.

Cerebrospinal meningitis kills 3 in Northern Region

Three persons have been killed by cerebrospinal meningitis - better know as CSM - at Bole in the Northern region, health authorities have said.

In total, about 30 CSM cases have been reported in the region - 14 at the Bole hospital and 16 at the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba polyclinic.

While no deaths were recorded at the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba polyclinic, three people lost their lives at the Bole hospital...

CSM kills 18 in Northern region

Eighteen people have been confirmed dead in newly recorded cases of Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) in two neighboring districts of the Northern region- Bole and Sawla-Tuna-Kalba.

The deaths have been recorded within a spate of three months, health officials in the region have confirmed.

106 more individuals have also been reportedly infected with the disease...

Meningitis update: Disease now an epidemic in Nadowli, Jirapa districts

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has declared a meningitis epidemic in the Nadowli and Jirapa Districts of the Upper West Region.

Current statistics show that about 550 people have been infected by different strain of the disease including pneumococcal, meningococcal and Neisseria meningitis.

About one hundred people have so far died.

The Upper West alone has recorded over 50 cases with more than 15 deaths...

In all, the District recorded twenty-four suspected cases of meningitis; however, the Lawra District Directorate of Health say the situation has not reached an epidemic level and public sensitization on the disease was currently ongoing.

93 Meningitis Deaths Recorded So Far In Ghana
The number of Meningitis-related deaths since the outbreak of the disease is 93, out of 2,182 cases, Minister of Health Alex Segbefia has disclosed to journalists at a press briefing on Friday 15 April 2016.

Ghana is known for seasonal outbreaks of Cerebrospinal Meningitis from October to March, but different strains identified as Pneumococcus Meningitis and Meningococcal Meningitis have been responsible for a high number of deaths in the latest outbreak, which began late last year.

So far, 59 districts and nine regions have been affected.

The Minister noted that initially, six districts in the Brong Ahafo Region reached epidemic levels. The districts were Tain, Sene West, Wenchi, Techiman North, Nkoranza South, and Jaman North. In addition, three districts in the Upper West Region were also declared as epidemic zone. The districts included Jirapa, Nadowli and Nanton.

However, the districts have been cleared of their epidemic tags and no meningitis deaths have been recorded in the past month...
