H1N1 flu claims 6th victim in St. Lucie County

PORT ST. LUCIE ? A 57-year-old woman who died Nov. 18 at St. Lucie Medical Center is the county?s sixth swine flu-related death, St. Lucie County Health Department officials announced Monday.
The woman?s family did not want her name released, however, they allowed St. Lucie Medical Center to release some details about her bout with H1N1 in hopes that the public would take the unique flu virus seriously and get vaccinated, hospital spokeswoman Jana Eschbach said.
The woman was eligible to get the free vaccine as one of the federally identified priority groups ? an adult younger than 65 with a chronic health condition ? but did not get the vaccine.
On Nov. 12, the woman came to St. Lucie Medical Center with flu-like symptoms and other health problems related to her weight. The woman weighed about 400 pounds, Eschbach said.
