H1N1 samples on a five-fold rise, says lab

PUNE: The number of throat swabs of critical patients being sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) for testing of the H1N1 infection has witnessed a five-fold increase since mid-June.
"We receive over 100 throat swabs every day. They are mainly from Pune and the rest of Maharashtra except Mumbai and Raigad, which send the swabs for testing at the Haffkine Institute in Mumbai," Mandeep Chadha, deputy director of NIV, told TOI on Monday. She added that the infection is on a 20 per cent rise, as compared to 15 per cent during the same period last year.
So farm the state has registered 1,425 positive cases of the H1N1 influenza since April. Of which, 612 cases are from Pune alone. The district also tops in death chart with 62 casualties of the 116 registered in the state till July 25. (since April 1st 2010)
"Besides monsoon, which provides conducive conditions for the spread of the virus, the infection's stride in virgin interiors is also making the matter worse," said Chadha.
Commenting on the point genetic mutation seen in throat swabs of three patients who succumbed to the virus, Chadha said, "We didn't see any change in the genetic make-up of the virus after that." Of the three patients, two were from Pune and one from Nashik, added Chadha. The mutation was detected in the haemagglutinin (HA) region of the virus' gene, she added.
State health officials elaborated, "The weekly infection cases of H1N1 virus in Maharashtra has increased from 100 to over 135 in July. The monsoon aides in the spread of the virus."
