The chair of the Manitoba Pork Council says the hog industry in Manitoba is on the brink of collapse.
Karl Kynoch says producers have been stretched to the limit after operating in the red for the past two years.
He says producers are currently losing an average of $40.00 for every animal they ship, and the upcoming year is not looking any better.
Kynoch expects the industry will see a mass exodus in the next few months if market conditions do not improve.
Some of these producers will literally lose everything they own, including their homes, in the process of exiting the industry.
He says the government needs to offer some support as producers have been put in this position through factors such as the H1N1 flu and Country Of Origin Labelling, which have been beyond their control.
