Confirmed case of Listeriosis under CHP investigation
The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (January 28) investigating a confirmed case of Listeriosis involving a 56-year-old man, and hence reminded the public to maintain good personal, food and environmental hygiene.
The patient, with chronic illnesses, presented with convulsion and fever in the evening on January 22 and was admitted to Pok Oi Hospital the same day. Upon admission, his condition deteriorated and he subsequently passed away the next day (January 23).
His blood culture yielded Listeria monocytogenes, as confirmed by laboratory testing today.
The CHP's investigation is proceeding.
Listeria monocytogenes can multiply in low temperature refrigerated foods that are contaminated, but can be easily killed by normal cooking temperatures.
To prevent Listeriosis, members of the public are reminded to take heed of the following advice:

- High-risk individuals such as pregnant women and persons with weakened immunity should avoid high-risk food, such as unpasteurised milk, soft cheese, prepared or stored salads, and cold meats;
- Cook food thoroughly and consume as soon as cooked;
- If it is necessary to keep leftover food, cover and refrigerate it properly at or below 4 degrees Celsius. Inspect food before reheating and reheat thoroughly before consumption.
