Last week I went to the supermarket where a vax clinic was being held, in hopes of getting my pneumonia vax. I prefer this type of setup over the doctor's office during this time of year and usually things are set up conveniently and all goes well.
I was the only one there last week but they were out of pneumonia vax so I decided to at least get my flu shot and get the other one this week.
Today I went to another clinic that was being held at the CVS drugstore; it had been going on for about 2 hours when I got there.
My first thought was: "Oh boy, I hope we learn something from this." There were 2 tables lengthwise with about 6 chairs directly across from them and 1 chair on the end. The setup was back in a small corner and over 25 of us were packed into this little area trying to get our paperwork filled out. We all were almost shoulder-to-shoulder.
A poor woman with a walker had no place to sit, the woman with a baby carrriage had no way to turn around and the man behind her was constantly grumbling about the wait line and disorganization.
There were cookies and orange juice for everyone; but the cookies were in a pile on an open plate. I saw some guy with grubby hands helping himself and I decided to pass.
When I left about half an hour later (that was just the paperwork line), they had already run out of rubber gloves and had to buy some from the drug store, were completely out of one type of forms, almost out of the main forms, only had a couple of doses of pneumonia vax left and were almost out of seasonal... they had put in a call to somewhere for some more to be delivered as soon as possible.
One of the workers said they had brought 200 doses of flu vax. I think the good thing is people are apparently listening to the news. I think this was a good learning experience; except they had apparently run out of gloves at their last clinic. Gloves are pretty important when giving shots; I'm not sure why they wouldn't overstock them... a couple of extra boxes are no big deal.
Hopefully, most the kinks will be smoothed out by the time the panflu vax becomes available.
