IRVING PARK — A confirmed measles case has been found in a Chicago resident, and another was found in a suburban Cook County resident, health officials announced Wednesday.
These are the first two measles cases this year in Cook County, according to a news release from the city and county health departments. The agencies are coordinating to investigate, identify and notify people who might have been exposed to the virus...
...This year’s first confirmed case was found in a Chicago adult who traveled internationally through O’Hare Airport in early April. They developed a rash April 25 and have been isolating at home since being diagnosed, according to the health departments. The adult had received one dose of the MMR vaccine; according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, two doses are recommended for the best protection.
The other case was found in a suburban Cook County adult whose vaccination status is unknown. The person went to a local hospital for medical care April 28 and was isolated after the illness was identified, according to the health departments.
People who were at these locations April 21-28 might have been exposed, according to the agency:
April 21 at Fittingly Delicious, 3939 W. Irving Park Road
10 a.m.-8 p.m. April 22 at O’Hare Airport, especially Terminal 1
10 a.m.-8 p.m. April 23 at O’Hare Airport, especially Terminal 1
10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. April 25 at Aldi, 7235 39th St. in Lyons
10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. April 27 at Shell, 3901 S. Harlem Ave. in Stickney
10:20 a.m.-1 p.m. April 28 at Mobil, 2945 S. Harlem Ave. in Berwyn
Officials initially warned about an April 21 exposure at the Chicago Public Library Independence Branch, 4024 N. Elston Ave. But by Thursday, investigators determined the person with measles did not visit the location, and no additional action needs to be taken by people who visited the library that day...
