Fear of bird flu has returned to Kokkarebellur Bird Sanctuary after a pelican took ill on Monday evening. So far, 11 pelicans have died in the sanctuary.

16 grey pelicans die in two months at conservation hub

BENGALURU: Sixteen grey pelicans have died after falling from trees in the last two months at Kokkare Bellur in Mandya district. Three grey pelicans fell from a tree on Monday. While two of them died, one is critically ill .

Villagers and members of Hejjare Balaga, a pelican conservation group, said the mating patterns and other habits of the migratory birds were normal.

Officials from the forest department and range forest officer Rajeshwari N S visited the site a month ago to look into the deaths and ruled out the possibility of bird flu.

Maddur: The death of 43 pelicans since December 5 in Kokrebellur surroundings is due to roundworms and not bird flu, confirmed experts after studying laboratory reports.

The villagers in the area had protested fearing bird flu in the area few days ago. Soon forest department swung into action and sprayed chemicals in the area as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of suspected bird flu. However, the recent findings confirm that the pelican deaths resulted from roundworms and not bird flu.

Few days ago, a pelican died near government higher primary school in the village after it fell down from a large tree.
